Reloading .308 - OAL and chamber Q

Thanks to all that posted. It is appreciated.

Remington's chamber throat is designed by a lawyer. 2.900"sounds about right. max length to fit the magazine is about 2.825".

That is enough neck tension to hold the bullet for accurate, single shot use. If you go deeper there is a danger of having the bullet stick in the barrel if you open the bolt on a live round. messy....

I hadn't considered max mag length (still relatively new to reloading) I'm sure I would have figured that out in short order. I will seat half of them back to 2.825" but will try the other half at 2.900" (single shot) and see if there is a discernable difference based on my skill.

Thanks again.:canadaFlag:

Shooting different seating depths will show what your barrel likes and what if any difference there is, i usually look for a good load before screwing with seating depths. Mag lenght is usually the deciding factor.

Best thing you could do would be to rebarrel lol. Factory barrels leave a lotto be desired. But they are good for starters.

I agree. This being my first .308 and I haven't found anywhere around here yet that's suitable to shoot beyond 200 yrds. I'll use it to get some trigger time and save some $$$ for the new pipe. Who knows, I might have that miracle factory barrel

Yep you never know. But I'm guessing if you are already having trouble getting the bullet near the lands without having it hanging out of the casing, you're probably not going to shoot to its total potential no matter what you do to it. I had a 700pss that was like this. It would shoot 3/4 at 100 and that was the best it could produce. Went through lots of bullets, loads etc. Got a custom barrel on there with a properly cut chamber and bango, 1/2 moa with minimal load development.
