Reloading 410 shells

I reload 410 shells [lots of them]
I use winchesters 3" and 2-3/4", old style and new style
I also use remingtons 3" and 2-3/4"
I like them both.
I have not been able to find loads for the cheap 410 shells [red color].

Not sure what the fuss is about for using brass cases instead of actual 410 shells? I can easily save 1 or 2 hundred hulls each year from buddies who hunt chickens with 410 who don't reload. Even without that, i have some hulls that have been loaded over 15 times before they blow apart. If you don't max out the pressure you can get a lot of loads from them.

If you bought 6 or 8 boxes and saved the hulls, it will last you a long time.

I have yet to see a plastic 410 hull that will last 10 loadings never mind 15? But if you say so. I get maybe 5 with the challenger hulls (Cheddite) and a couple more with AAHS before they're all messed up.

I use only the 3 inch red winchester hulls. I used to mark them with a felt pen but stopped counting after 15 loads. Not all hulls will last 15 loads, lots of brass cracks, blow outs on the middle of the hull, and the crimps get messed and loosened up. Will 100 hulls last 15 loads? No, but a third of them will.

I don't max the pressure and I crimp them carefully. I use a Mec650jr and I favor it because of the pre-crimp. I can load other hulls or or shorter ones but there is always a calculated damage to a number of the hulls while getting it set. The 3 inch Wins work good for my clay shooting and have lots of power for shooting chickens and small game. I'm satisfied with the load and I haven't changed or reset the press for 20 years. My friends give me the odd bag of hulls here and there, and I circulate a new box or two into the pool of hulls every year.

I have a buddy who loads 410 with a Lee load-all type set up from decades ago, his hulls don't last as long but he maxes them out claiming he gets better velocity. He still gets 8 or 10 loads. I can't comment on other people's loads , nor how long the hulls last because I don't know.

I use Rem, Win, and Federal two and a half and three inch hulls with great success in a old MEC press. I don't know how many loads I get, I just keep using them until they are used up. Powder is crucial for case length. I think clean burning is more important then pressure. If your load leaves the case mouth looking sort of burned they won't last. My loads leave the cases clean, I can't tell a fresh case from one loaded a few times. Just be sure to load only the same type of case per session. Adjusting the press eats hulls. Mine work in a old Mossy 500 pump and a Spanish SxS.

The thing about using brass it you never need to worry about keeping a stock of plastic hulls, yes, some may get 15 reloads out of some plastic, but they still wear out.
Forget about if you want to use black powder in it (Yes there is are cases you would want to use BP) , the plastic just melts and makes a mess.
I have a 12 G coach gun that I love to load up with BP shells, makes a good whump when you let her off and turns a few heads LOL
Brass is for life

For reloading the 410, what shot sizes do you prefer for grouse, #6 or #7.5? For a .5 ounce charge (load), I would think 7.5 would meter better. Getting set up to reload 410 and input would be much appreciated.

I'm using the old win AA hulls. Clay buster wads. Hodgson lil'gun powder and a Mec 600jr press. Currently using federal primers and when those are done I'll switch to chedites which I'm already using on my 28g loads.

HI Ranger Dave;
I reload 410's, [lots of them].
I load Winchesters, [old type and new type HS], 2-1/2 and 3"
easy to load. 1/2oz and 11/16 oz.
I also load Remingtons, 2-1/2 and 3".
Easy to get wads.
I'm getting out of loading 410's, I have too many and I sold my 3 410's
Get the Lyman shotshell reloading book. It has all the information.
