Reloading .45-70 Ruger No.1

I have a #1S with a Leopold 1-4x I shoot 350 Hornady’s to about 2000 fps ( could go hotter) with IMR 4198 and it shoots cloverleaf groups.
In all my years of reloading 45/70 I have found IMR 4198 to be the best option.
If I need more I bring out my Tropical in .458

350gr results

  • Hornady 350gr & Speer 350gr using Re7 & H4198
  • each powder same charge for both bullets no excess pressure signs ;)
  • Speer 350gr & Re7 highest mv & smallest group

Use magnum primers Federal 215

  • erratic ignition suspected with CCI 200 used Fed 215 instead
  • Speer 350gr / Re7 / Starline brass
  • barrel scrubbed clean with Sweet's 7.62 Solvent
  • fouling shot then 4 shots grouped not too bad
  • strong chinook wind gusts today not ideal for tight groups ;)

45-70 is so fun to play with.
I have a Marlin 1895 and get around 1800fps from the speer 400gr.
but the best memories are my cast 405 gr w/ gas check shooting gophers for hours. definitely see where you hit!
Always wanted a ruger or browning for the real hot loads. nice gun!

  • Sierra 300gr JHP & 300gr TSX same charge TSX way faster
  • scope change Nikon Omega BDC-250 3-9x40mm plenty eye relief
  • 300gr TSX good accuracy no excess pressure could load faster ;)

I had the same results with a mono metal bullet in 30-06. Needed to back off 2 grains to get the same velocity. I never tried monos in the 375s I’ve had though. Still got a box of 375 250gr GMX I think.

Blue Dot with polyester fiberfill works for me as an alternative to discontinued SR4759 which worked great for reduced loads. Uncharted waters not a recommendation Blue Dot .45-70 data isn't published anywhere got the idea after reviewing Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook load data. Blue Dot also works not too bad in my .416's & other .458's.

Accurate load guide lists reduced loads for some calibers using Accurate 5744 if can find it I'll give it a try: https://accuratepowder.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/accurate_load_data_3.5.pdf

Seams to be relatively uncharted but Seafire on another outdoor site has info and a starting formula. Was curious where you started mostly. Currently use either Unique or Trailboss but a recent purchase finds me searching for ways to use 9lbs of Blue Dot that came in a package deal.

Some sweet results here. I'm considering a #1 in either .45-70 or .405 Winchester, but also thinking of another CVA Scout in .45-70 to scratch the itch. I have the same in .35 Whelen and 250's at 2630 are totally doable to I'm fairly certain the gun can handle some stout loads.

Nice Sharps! My oldie .45-70 is a Trapdoor Springfield modern re-creation a Pedersoli S900 Carbine. Off hand shooting with Pyrodex loads it's a hoot.

500gr / Re7

Lots of ways to load it settled on Hornady 500gr @ ~1550 fps mv & zeroed 1 shot likely to produce 2 holes. ;)

Out of my LEE double cavity 340 grain RNFT bullet mold, powder coated & pushed out by 40.0 grains of Hodgson H4198 gives me 1600 fps. If you seriously tuck in the recoil isn't that bad. Fail your tuck-in & you get a sting you will not want to repeat. Sure, I went to 42 grains of H4198 but it was just too punishing.
