Hi All, I only shoot (2) calibers 45 Colt and 45-70 Govt and I reload for both. I have a Lee 4-Hole Turret press which works fine for the 45Colt ( except for the primer feeder, that's crap), I also use it to reload my 45-70 but I take out the indexing rod and turn by hand as with some of the large bullets (500g RNFP) the height is a challenge when seating the bullets.

Lately I have been thinking about upgrading to a progressive press but damn they are not cheap. Is anyone here reloading 45-70 with a progressive press and what are your recommendations? Secondly does the primer feed work consistently?

Thanks, Retreever

I cant imagine how much 45-70 one would shoot to justify the cost of a progressive for those calibers. I agree that the indexing rod is a liability and not an asset. Mine has never left the drawer. If priming is the main drawback you are facing it might make sense to just buy a good priming tool and batch prime your brass and go from there.

I own both a Hornady LNL progressive and a RCBS RC Supreme. I do most of my loading on the latter. The progressive is dedicated to 9 mm rounds. IMHO, the two weakest points of a progressive press are primer feed, and powder hopper. Any kind of precision reloading requires a single stage press.

I have an old Spartan Single Stage press I use exclusively to reload my 45-70 black powder cartridges for my 1884 Springfield Trap Door so maybe I just need a better single stage press.

If you toss the primer feed and index rod, the Lee 4-hole is basically just a single that makes it easier to swap dies around. A hand priming tool can work wonders, but remember to deprime/size your brass on the first die BEFORE you prime it all!

Your right on that but there is still the height clearance issue with the larger bullets.
