Reloading .45

Hi All,

I recently got a 1911 and now have to start getting everything set up to reload .45ACP. I've got my powder figured out and stuff, but what is considered a good price for FMJ projectiles? I've only reloaded 9mm and 308 to date so .45 is new to me.

Any recommendations? I'll be going with 230gr FMJ as it appears to tbe the standard. Is $150/1000 considered a good price?

Once in a while I'll buy a box of FMJ but for the most, I'm using plated Berry's or Campro 230gr pills which are usually $75/500 so if you're getting 1K of 230gr FMJs for $150. I'd say, hook a buddah up. :)
 
That sounds like a good price. I pay around the same for Berry's plated. Also 230gr is a must for many 1911 I have 2 that won't cycle 185gr or 200gr reliably unless quite hot so 230 is the way to go
 
I get Zero Brand FMJ projectiles for around $140.00/1,000.

Make sure you do a plunk test and get an overall length that works before going into full production.
 
I have to ask, why not just shoot lead cast projectiles? Is there an accuracy difference with FMJ? Cast lead projectiles are half the price.

The OP didnt ask for cast, and there is not much difference in price really. Cast will stll run the OP $136-$146 (Budget Shooter Supply) before tax for 1000 unless you cast your own.

Bullet Barn are $186 for 1000 230gr RN cast
 
I've been reloading for my 45 Norinco since last summer. My cast loads shoot better than the jacketed factory that I've tried. Cast should be around half the cost of jacketed bullets. Shipping is expensive and it doesn't matter which type you are ordering. Local pickup can save you at least a third of your cost.

I cast for my 45 as well but it's nice to have jacketed or plated for reloading as well. Although once I get a better place to start pumping out cast, I will likely just stick with that unless I see a really good deal.

My question wasn't what the OP asked for, it was why he asked for it. And if you are paying the same price for cast that you are for jacketed, you're getting hosed. I pay around $65.00 for 1000 cast .45 auto rounds.

If hes asking for fmj then i guess he wants fmj? anyways to answer your other point, I cast my own at around $30/1000.

The prices quoted are from the 2 sites, if there is cheaper then post so others can get it cheaper.

To clarify, I was asking why FMJ because I shoot cast and I was wondering if I could look to improve accuracy by switching to FMJ.

Interesting that you can get the price down so much more by casting your own though... I'll have to look into that.
