Reloading .45ACP Winclean brass

With Winclean getting quite popular these days, there's plenty of free brass available, even in .45ACP. However, many reloaders, including myself, absolutely HATE that .45ACP brass for because Olin had the 'bright' idea of putting a small primer instead of a large. This is the cause of many headaches, because if such a case gets through the inspection and gets mixed with regular primed brass, you'll probably end-up with a wasted primer, or a primer blowout because, as obvious as it seems, large primers won't fit a small primer hole.

However, using this brass exclusively is quite interesting because I wouldn't have to switch primer systems all the time on my Dillon 650 when I want to switch from .45 to .223 or 9mm.

Now that makes me wonder : Will a small primer be able to ignite reliably ANY kind of pistol powder in a .45ACP casing (I'm using slow-burning Longshot powder in my .45ACP load), or am I going to have misfires, slow-fires, or even a detonation?

Also, is this brass the same quality than regular Winchester brass, or it is a cheaper batch made for single-use?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

it's supposed to have no difference- and i haven't seen any- but i'm using 231, which works for just about anything- from what i can tell, it's the same brass, just small pocketed

The brass is a little thiner.. But it is not single use.. 231 is a great powder and will work just fine with a small primer...

Something to make you go hmmm....Since the primer cup comes up from underneath the shellpate and uses the shellplate to center the primer on the case using a small primer system with a large plate may cause problems.. I'll have to check two things if the cups are uniform on the OD and if not have they made a small primer version of the shell plate...

Thanks for your comments guys.

Good point Bear, didn't think about this one. I'll stay with my regular brass then.

If you are using a Dillon reloader (like my RL550), all you need do is use a small pistol primer bar/cup and small primer feeding tube instead of the ones for the large primers it keeps the primer being feed at the center of the primer hole of the brass and off you go you are set for the 45 ACP brass with small primer pocket.
