Reloading 7.62 NATO in .308

So here is what I did:

Using Varget and Sierra HPBT 168gr, max load 46gr.
Starting load = -10% + -10%

I started having great groups from 40 gr to 41.5 gr but I found my velocity a bit low for a long distance load (max 2550 fps at 41.5gr)

Best groups : 0.43" at 40 gr and 0.5" at 41.5 gr (5 rounds)

41.5 is my max load -10%. I'd like more speed but does it worth it? Another way to ask: Is 2550 fps 'fast enough' for a 168gr bullet to stay accurate up to 800 m for example?
If no, up to what speed should I load ?

The Sierra 168 is a good 300 meter bullet. It is not designed as a long range bullet. For that you want the 175 (same bullet with a longer boattail).

You did not mention your barrel length, but that velocity sounds low for long range.

I use a 32" barrel, the 155 Lapua or Berger at 3000 fps.

If you want to shoot long range, I suggest you switch to the Sierra 175 or a 155 match bullet. the 168 would have excessive wind drift.

Thanks Ganderite,

I'm using a 24" barrel.
The max velocity in my book is 2731 fps for 46 gr but because I'm using 7.62 NATO brass I can't use that weight; but can I use that speed as my max ?
Will look into those bullets !
