My son and I have been shooting his SKS a lot this Christmas. The surplus stuff is ok for casual plinking. Cleaning it afterwards is not. We tried some commercial softpoints in it and the groups were actually quite good. We got to thinking that it might be worth it to reload for the SKS assuming there was some decently priced brass around. I tried a search and didn't come up with anything on Gunnutz. My question is: Is anyone out there reloading for the 7.62 x 39 and where are you getting your brass? What bullet/powder combination are you using?
Thanks.

I reload these for my SKS. I bought a few bags of Winchester Brass plus I scrounge at the range. Be careful though, if you find Remington Brass it uses Small Rifle Primers not Largte Rifle like Winchester does. I have reasonable results with Hornady 123 gr soft poinbt bullets and also with 115 gr cast lead bullets. Best Powder is Reloader 7. You can also get good accuracy with the cast lead bullets and unique powder but this will not cycle the action.

You can always use new brass and primers and pull down the surplus stuff for powder and bullets. Still cheaper than buying new powder and bullets.

But what kind of powder is in that Czech stuff? And where's the best place to get 7.62x39 brass?

The powder is Lovex (Accurate Arms). I buy brass on ebay.
Interesting. Maybe if I ever get a set of 7.62x39 dies we can do a group buy or something.

I reload using my own cast bullets. With AA1600 get a 130 gr bullet going 1700 fps. Lots of downrange smack and very little recoil. Shoot steel at 10 yds and beyond. Can't do that with jacketed.

I've got a kitty-litter container full of once-fired Federal 7.62x39 brass, if anyone's interested in it; I WAS planning on reloading it, but the surplus is so cheap right now :)

Do they make brass catchers for the SKS? My SKS flings brass everywhere.

That matches my experience. The SKS throws the brass pretty far and beats the hell out of it. When I used Cast Bullets and Unique the action didn't cycle so the SKS was more like a straight pull bolt action, that was easy on the brass.

To be honest, since I wasn't expecting much accuracy anyway, I continued to use some brass that was pretty beat up around the head. Never had any issues really.

I reload 7.62 x 39 for my 527 cz...I use 31 gr. of H335 and a 123gr. hornady psp...it shoots around an inch in my gun..this is close to max so load with caution
