Reloading and Dyslexia

Man do I have a story...

I have mild Dyslexia that usually never causes me problems. This time however it caused me a little bit of an issue.

I recently switched from a single stage press to a Lee 1000 progressive. So as i was setting up the Auto disk powder measure I couldn't remember what Titegroup load I was using. So I weighed a drop from my old powder measure and even went as far as pulling a bullet from a known good round and weighing the powder. This is where my dyslexia kicked in and converted the 4.3 i read on the scale to 3.4 in my head.

I then tried to locate a disk that would drop 3.4. The closest i could find was one that dropped 3.6. So I loaded 50 and headed off to the range. Believe it or not, they shot fine and I didn't notice any difference. I even loaded 1 old, 1 new in the mag and still didn't notice.

In any event I came home and loaded up 1000. Only caught my mistake when I went to switch the press to load .45acp after I ran out of 9mm projectiles.

I immediately counted out 100 and headed off to the range to verify they were ok. I still can't believe it, but they seem to shoot fine and are accurate. Just a little more sooty than my regular loads.

It would be interesting to run them through a Chrono to see how fast they are shooting.

I thought it was a funny story to share that had a happy outcome.
 
sometimes you can "get around " that problem by changing your powder or bullet weight so you only have ONE digit to remember- for me, it's 5 grains of 231 using a 124 grain bullet for 9mm and 6 grains of 231 for a 200 grain 45acp
 
seeing how it's LEE discs he was using anyway, the REAL charge was probably around 4- they do THROW LIGHT, you know
 
I have a friend that has Dyslexia and is an avid reloader/shooter. He asks his wife or one of his teen age children to double check his numbers when he is setting up to avoid any mistakes. He said he had one instance that his wife caught where he did the same thing, wrong powder charge but it was more powder rather then less powder.

Always good to have a second set of eyes to verify.
 
Its very rare for me not to catch it. Usually I'm very careful.

A simple solution for me is to post my actual numbers above where I weigh my stuff. Then I can simply look back and forth between the 2 and make sure they match. I just need to make sure I write the initial number down correctly ;)..

Yes and I got away easy with this one.. Woulda sucked if it was 4.5 and I converted it to 5.4. Can you say +P+...
 
I just checked my logbook. I thought 3.4 of TG looked familiar... it is my accuracy load with 135gr lead bullets for several pistols. 4.3 must be pretty hot.

Your solution of posting the loads near the scales should work, so long as you note the corect load.

My little lad has dyslexia. Wow, until I started researching it I never realised how complicated it was. Or how little is known about it in mainstream education.

Apart from our education systems being absolutely useless for minds that don't quite fit the norm, it seems like you dyslexics have some pretty neat skills.

BTW, I don't have dyslexia but I often post the weight above the scale I am using. Years of drinking Newcastle Brown Ale made me do that.
 
I have mild Dyslexia as well but im a carpenter... I cut sh!t to short/long all the time... lol...

but its like 54 5/8 inc cut to 45 5/8inch... whats funny is I never phuck up the fractions...

Im extra carfull on expensive crown... But once the day started and I get on a roll... I phuck up something... Its life... I DONT REALOAD ...
