Anyone try it? I bought a bear hanger to supplement my shotgun for when I first went prospecting into the great northern outdoors. I tried a flare and a banger just so I would know what to expect. The spent cartridge looks like it had a blank it.

I don’t need the bear banger because I always take a shotgun, but we had coyote packs near our house and it would be nice to have something easily accessible for the women to scare them off with

We just converted over to Record line of products from a Cdn source wildlife products
easier to use pistol and cheaper loads of various types

so your going to have a nasty incident trying to reload that with a firecracker in the place of the bear banger or the flare

Just my opinion

wear a heavy leather glove and turn your face away when you fire it

The 22lr blank should expel the charge so I’m not worried. I don’t think it is more than a firecracker, just a half second delayed fuse. I can cut one open for examination

Let us know how that works for you.
I’m picturing a coke can of Tannerite propelled by a 308 blank.
With a half second fuse of course.

While the case appeared to be a 22lr the launcher is most definitely centerfire. I don’t have the old banger to disect and I only have one left, will see the next time a coyote comes around

Ok.
The flare/bangers are fired by .22 acorn blanks. The same blanks used for starter pistols. They're very small. DO NOT USE A .22 RIFLE BLANK! ! !
It will blow the plastic casing into shrapnel the instant it goes off. Embedding pieces into you, your hand or both.
They're glued into the plastic flare/banger casings.
The banger projectile itself is a thin alum case with a burning delay disc fuse, fixed into the bottom. Filled with the explosive powder and a plastic disc press fit to the top. The powder is basically primer compound.

Could you reload it?
Well you could warm the plastic case and hope the glue lets go allowing you to put a new acorn blank into it.
But. Creating a fused case full of initiator or booster compound? You're going to need specialized non static production equipment with grounding loops. Because one spark and you're injured or dead.
If I were to do it myself. I'd use paper rolled around a pencil. Firework fuse in one end about 1/4 long. With the end even with the paper. The inside would have tissue or something packed around the rest of the fuse inside. I'd fill it with black powder. Cap it with a slice of wood. And wrap the whole thing super tight in paper masking tape until I could fit it inside the plastic casing.

Which is a S**T load of work. When you could just order them off https://kodiakcanada.com/collections/launchers-and-bangers?page=1

the older ones were rimfire the new ones are all center fire

some older flare pencils have both firing pins and you can exchange it one or the other depending on what type of flares you have.

one of the better flare pencils I own is marked 'Made in West Germany' it has both types of firing pins.

The rimfire flares were less dependable than the centerfire flares, at least IMHO.
