I am a handloader looking to cook up some ammo for my new AR15. One of the gun geeks down at the range says that a fella can buy reloading dies that are specific to the AR15...

Have any of you fellers used them? I have experienced a few failures to feed with my Bushmaster and suspect that my home-brewed ammunition might be the culprit. The stuff worked great in my HK SL8 but the Bushie seems to hang up on it from time to time. I am using those Sierra 77gr. Match Kings seated out to the maximum length.

Do you have any recipes you would care to share? I am looking for a precision load, your two cents are sincerely appreciated.

I found that when loading range brass for my AR match rifle (SGW match barrel, Colt lower, SGW flat top upper, would shoot under 1/2" all day with match ammo) that headspace varied so much with the brass that I would have to gauge each brass individually, hardly practical with a 1050 Dillon. This may be what is happening with your loads. Range pickup brass is so available but it varies inheadspace according to the rifle it comes from. Adjusting the die to full length size for the longest used brass created excess headspace with shorter used brass. Maybe I missed something, I don't know, but I couldn't afford a problem in a match, so I ended up loading my match
ammo with new RP brass , not fired brass, and never had a problem with my ammo.

FYI my match load was a Sierra 52 or 53 gr HP and H4895, RP small rifle primer, RP new brass.

My only advice is to use a taper crimp seating die and a small base sizer, the small base sizer seems to make chambering more reliable and the taper crimp makes sure the necks do not get caught on the feed ramp.
I am not sure about any specific dies for the AR, but most guys shooting autoloaders use the sb sizer and taper crimp seater with great success.
 
AB I have the standard RCBS dies for .223 - is this stuff you are talking about something different? I have never seen a taper crimp for rifles or a small base resizer...I am pretty much an out-house reloader I suppose...but the stuff I made runs perfectly in my HK SL8...?

Do you sell that stuff AB?

Yes they are slightly different. I carry the Redding brand.
My experience with the SL8 is limited, but they seem to be able to feed and digest almost anything you can stick in the mag.
ARs are not as forgiving.
