So I picked up a nice little 340 savage chambered in triple deuce. I'm new to loading for this caliber. I'd like to shoot coyotes with it inside of 200 yards. I believe it's a 1 in 14 twist, So it should shoot 55gr and under boolets quite well I would think. Does anyone have any suggestions for me on size of boolet and powders to go with it?

Thanks,
Vern.

Try the Hornady 50 grain V-Max. This bullet has shot well in every 222 Remington I have tried it.
Usually use Vihtavuori N133 these days, but have had great success with IMR or H 4198 and the now
obsolete Reloder 12. D.

Mine also shot 24gr of Win 748/55gr SP..........RE#7 and 50gr. Best to run loads about 90% as these guns have weak extraction at least mine did.

I always had the best accuracy with 50 gr bullets in my 222 (a Sako). 50 gr Hornady SPSX bullets give really good terminal performance on critters.

24gr Varget, 55gr bulk Hornady sp ($15/100) in my long action Winchester M70 piles them up in one ragged hole.
I'd drop it to 23gr in the Savage.

I have a 788 Rem that I used to shoot a lot. Excellent accuracy with 52 gr Hornady SP's and 748. My brother has a re- barrelled 700 Varmit that he shot Bench Rest with (custom class). Not sure what bullet but powder was 748.

I had a 340B years ago and while I reloaded for it, I never developed a load really as all I required of it was vermin accuracy within 200yards: It accomplished this satisfactorily with factory loads.

50gr projectiles are all I ever bother with for any of my 222 rifles: It's a good size, and there will never be a question of stability in the typical 1:14" twist. V-Max, SP, SPSX ... all three worked well, and in 222 rifles I did spend time punching paper I found slower powders to perform best. RL10x was superb,(good luck finding now) as was IMR 4320...

I load for the 222 also in a savage 340b. I also have a savage 340c in 222 with about 200 rounds down the pipe. I have loaded rounds with 35gr v-max bullets,45 gr round nose,50gr pointed soft points, 50gr v-max and 55gr pointed soft points. All loads were made with IMR4198. Found that although the 50gr v-max shot good they do not perform like the other bullets. My rifles really like the flat based bullets over the boat tails. Primer are Win or CCI Small Rifle.
my accuracy loads are
35gr v-max,21gr IMR 4198
45gr sp, 21gr IMR 4198
50gr Hornady spsx, 20.8gr IMR 4198
50gr Sierra spitzer, 20.8gr IMR 4198
55gr Hornady SP, 20.0gr IMR 4198.

Yep. Hard to beat IMR4198 in the 222!

these Savage 340 are so understated, they work great, are more accurate than people think, were the first to use the barrel nut system,i have the 30-30 version, and it shoots great, had one in .22 Hornet which was also great fun,and pretty good shooter too, can't go wrong with these inexpensive no nonsense rifles.

My 340 loves 50g bullets and it is not fussy about make. Regularly shoot coyotes out to 400 yds and they are DOA. Just picked up a 2nd magazine from Brownell's. Not cheap at $60.00 cdn but they did mail it to me without any hassles about ITAR.

I just picked one up from trade ex and have tried 4 factory loads. the federal and remington 50 gr shot great and cycled smooth. The S and B and ppu shot ok but the bolt was sticky. I think it may be because of slightly longer cases but I'm not sure. I'm planning on pulling the bullets and trying to reload the brass. I was planning to get some varget for this because I also have 308's and 7-08's, or some H380, but might have to give imr 4198 a try after reading this thread. Anybody else have problems with European ammo? The remington ammo shot tighter than I thought I could shoot and the federal was pretty close.

All great recipes boyz!

think I will take my 222 out tomorrow. You made me miss her and she has not seen the sunshine since last winter.

My Favorite is pushing a 45gr with Varget or 4198..... perfect for fox or critters
