Reloading for .300 savage in a 99

I now have all I need to start, but I would like some more info.
I will be reloading for a 1954 99 EG in .300 Savage.
I have new Winchester Brass, IMR 4064, Remington 9 1/2 Primers and Hornady interlock 180 grain roundnose.
Does anybody have any advise on this combo. I understand that all rifles will be differant and that I have to work up loads, but what results might I expect?
I get fairly good results using factory remington 180's, I hope to get better with reloads. Any tips or suggestions will be appreciated

i had a 300 savage , i think it was a '99e .....

it loved 165 grain nosler balistic tips , can't recall the powder charge , but i was using imr 4064 , remington mag primers and remington brass .

Actually Win 748 is the cat's a$$ in the .300 Savage......40gr/180gr.........41gr/165gr and 42gr /150gr bullet All shot MOA in mine Win brass CCI or Fed primers........Harold

My 99F likes 165 gr Hornadys with either IMR 4895 or RL15. I still have a few more loads to check out before I decide which powder. 180 gr bullets take up too much powder space in my opinion 165s are a good compromise.

I use 150 gr hornady sprite points and crimp them with a Lee factory crimp die. The groove in the bullet is in the correct location; you end up with a proper overall lenght for the 99 action. I like to crimp hunting loads for this cartridge as the neck is very short and weak. I use 4064 also.

I have never used 180 grs as I only hunt deer. I would think the 180gr would take a lot of case space.

No need to either crimp or use the cannalure the neck tension is more than sufficient..Harold
