Hello everyone

I have recently bought a Norc. M14 and would like to get some reloading dies in .308. I'm confussed as to what type of die to get, a full length resize, neck resize, etc? I'm hoping someone can give some advise as to what works best for functioning in a semi.
Thanks

I would opt for the full length dies....if money will allow get the neck size die as well.....all new brass should be full length resized, and 1x fired brass should be full length resized due to not being from you rifle's chamber...this is my thinking anyway

Full length size for all auto loaders.........RCBS makes "small base dies" for . 308 win.....amongst other calibers commonly fired in auto-loaders.....Small base dies were made especially for this purpose to keep resized brass in auto's from having "jams.........cost $40.............your call .....if reliability is wanted...

hs4570...........you mileage may vary

"...neck sizing or parial(sic)-full-length..." Sooner or later you will have feeding problems with neck sized only or partial length sizing. Semi-auto's require full length resizing every time. The OAL and case length are important too.

OAL is obviously important, if you are feeding from the mag, and case length? Thanks to the miracle of Cerro-Safe, I can tell you the chamber in my M14 is 2.10" long, so unless I'm making cases out of .30-06, I'll never have to trim, except to keep the ends square.

Thanks for all the replys guys! It looks like I need to full length size for reliability purposes and then neck size perhaps every other time I reload? So I should be looking for dies that are small base dies that full length resize, plus pick up a neck sizer die? I'm kind of partial to RCBS, so I think I would order the dies that hs4570 sugests.

From what I understand, the M14 cycles very quickly, and the brass may not have cooled/contracted much before it is ejected, so neck-sizing (or anything less then full-length) may end up with brass that won't chamber easily - and that in turn can lead to a slam-fire or an out of battery ignition.

I use the RCBS small base dies, never a problem, but the brass of course doesn't last like it would in a bolt action.

i've got 4 of the fool things and thanks to lee dies, everything fits everywhere- the only reason i segregate is because of different pressure curves in each rifle-
