Reloading for a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39

I just purchased a Ruger American in 7.62x39, sighted it in, then tried a few groups with some German surplus and S&B ammo at 50 yds. It gave me .75" groups, with the S&B 4 of the 5 were in 0.35". I was surprised and pleased with the accuracy. I want to reload for this rifle but get mixed advise about bullet diameter. Some say .311, while others say .308. Some say American made rifles are .308 while European are .311. Does the surplus come in different sizes? Bullet weight seems to be about 124 gr. in most of the surplus ammo I've bought. What bullet would you recommend and where (in Canada) can I buy them? I would be mostly target shooting, but might use it deer hunting as well.

I have had some good luck with 123 hornady soft points and H4198. I might try some CFE blk next.

As far as I'm aware the Ruger American barrel is a .311 bore diameter, the only reason why I havn't purchased one. Hornady makes some interesting choices in the bullet diameter along with Sierra as well which will both be decent hunting bullets.

My CZ527 shoots .308 dia bullets just fine.

Why not slug your bore. You’ll know in about 40 seconds instead of asking about it online and getting mixed answers.

H4198 or IMR 4198 123-150gr It shoots 150gr Sierra SP .311 nice too for bigger game.

I have shot Federal Fusion 123 gr to .65" groups with mine. Avg 2300 fps out of my 16" barreled rifle. I have not tried to develop a load yet. Just finished developing a load for my Howa 7.62X39 with great results.

The early Ruger Mini-30s were made with 308 barrels. I do not know what current production is.

Slug the barrel, or try both sizes and see what works best.

I cast my own, usually 123gr and use 25gr Accurate 1680.

I'm shooting 93gr cast Tokarev bullets sitting on 3grs of Bullseye to relax chickens.

I use 110gn Campro .308 M1 Carbine Projectiles nose for range rounds

Surprisingly they measure .310 at the base. Keep them around M1 Carbine velocity and they are very accurate out to 100 yards, will consistently bang steel at 200 with appropriate holdover or clicks. Very economical round.

My load for Ruger Ranch:

Powder: 21 grains IMR 4227
Primer: S&B LR
Projectile: Campro 110gr .308
Brass: SB, PMC or PPU Brass
COAL: 2.0145in
Est Velocity: 2128fps

Yes it certainly does, only powder I found that gets a 123gn projectile moving at Barnaul FMJ (2543 fps)speeds.

Thanks I bought some based on your advice. 4227 is available for 75$ tho I dunno if it's worth the premium over h110. I've been using 4198 and gonna try cfe black first. Should have in hand on Monday.
