I picked up this winter a nice H&R 158 Topper in 30-30 and finally took it to the range. It does ok (~2.5 MOA) with factory 150gr FP ammo and I have had some good success (~2MOA) with reloading 110gr bullets over 35gr of H335.

Anyone here reloading "pointy" bullets in their single shot 30-30's? I am thinking of trying some 165gr Spitzer bullets as I have a ton of them. Anyone try these? If so, what OAL did you use?

30-30 with pointy bullets

I reload some 150 grain spitzers for a bolt action I use. I made up a dummy round with the bullet just started into the empty case, which I then chambered. The bullet will be pushed back into the case and when extracted and measured will tell what your max/max OAL is. Stay back a bit from that and you will be ok.

I didn't use any larger jacketed bullets as most of the bullets on the market won't expand properly at the speed the 30-30 can push them. Cast on the other hand is perfect. Enjoy

Excellent point on the bullet expansion. I will probably work up two loads.. 125gr SP for varmits/plinking and 150gr for deer. Some day I will start casting. I have lot of lead pistol bullets I am not using that I would melt down ;-)
