Reloading for QUIET 12g birdshot?

Well, the short of it was I was successful in obtaining my goal. Not 100% happy with my load, but our group of 3 were able to harvest a bear (rifle), and we shot 3 grouse with my 12g loads.

I was not able to find any reliable source of load data with smokeless powder. Emailed ADI in Australia (makers of many powders) and I received a form letter saying they can't give me a load. Emailed Hodgedon - no reply. Found a load on the internet that I was NOT willing to try, although based on my reloading experience I could believe it would work. Had a guy from my local gun club make me some subsonic loads, right near 1000 fps if I recall. They were, to me, too loud.

So, end result was I loaded up black powder (Pyrodex RS) loads. I used Lee scoops (I have the red and yellow sets). 2.11cc of Pyrodex and 3.1cc of #7.5 lead shot. Took a Challenger trap hull (blue), cut it down, Cheddite 209 primer, 2.11cc Pyrodex RS (red dipper), cardboard disc, 3.1cc lead shot (yellow dipper), cardboard disc, then white glue around the upper disc to seal it.

With the first grouse, first shot knocked the grouse down, then my buddy fired a second shot (double barreled shotgun) at it to finish it. We then decided to "double blast" future grouse aka pull both triggers. If the grouse were close enough and sitting/standing no problems. Tried a couple of single shots at flushed birds without success (we're not accurate? not enough shot? too weak? or some combo...) In any case, the loads, even double blasted, were sufficiently quiet that we had no concerns about scaring any bears or other wildlife.

I suspect that instead of using #7.5 shot I will try larger shot for next fall. Or maybe make a duplex load and put in some steel BBs (from my BB gun) with the shot. My big concern was noise, and I probably should have experimented by shooting targets other than paper or aluminum pop cans. But at the end of the 3 day hunt, 1 bear and 3 grouse.

Thanks for asking!

Thanks wasa, ..... well 1 bear and 3 grouse and a good time out there .... sounds like success to me!!

I think I will try to come up with a subsonic load with smokeless powder this winter and test it. And if that does not work I now know I can give it a try with Pyrodex RS and which I have here as well.

Thanks again wasa for sharing your experience.

There is a subsonic load out there for 1 1/4 oz with clays powder(not suitable for 1 1/4 otherwise) at speeds of 800-990 that is reported to be very(for a 12g) quiet. I want to try that one out.
Also(from research, not experience) tightwad 1 1/8 would be a good candidate to load down, because the published data is slow, with high pressure, and their lighter loads have very low pressure published, so it should still burn well below the published load.

I want to try both of these, but haven’t been able to get anywhere with powder.

Jessegreenwood, I just ordered 3 lbs of Titewad from The Gun Dealer .... and exactly for that purpose ..... subsonic load. The Gun Dealer still has Titewad in stock, I just checked.

I am however still looking for Clays powder ..... can't find it anywhere ..... :-(

I should share my experience with the factory Win AA subsonic loads at the skeet field. Bought some on a lark, found that that the number of missed birds went up substantially. Upon closer inspection, most of the birds had chips or (multiple) dings that failed to break the bird. Given that pellet energy is a function of velocity squared, I guess I shouldnt be surprised. No more subsonic loads for me, particularly in the field...

I have a pound of Clays powder... if I can find a safe, published load, I am willing to do some testing. I only have about 6 different wads though... I don't have any Titewad powder.

You are dreaming if you are looking for a shotgun load as quiet as the cci quiet.
A shotgun primer only is louder!

Yes sir at about 140 db for a 209 even winchester poppers/ blanks we use for the dogs come in around 180 and they have no load to speak of
Cheers

Cosmic, thanks for sharing ....

that was #8 or #8 1/2 shot right?

Your experience confirms what I thought ... one has to go up one or two (or 3) steps in shot size and to get the necessary penetration at subsonic velocities. And this is also the reason why I am playing with the idea of a subsonic TSS load ..... TSS shot is so much denser than lead ... and TSS should perform very well at subsonic speeds .....

7 1/2 shot at skeet distances. Let us know how your expensive experiment turns out.

I thought I was crazy guy out there making black powder and using reloads and black powder. I have been making Black Powder for about 3 yrs now and having a blast with testing different loads of lead and steel and learning the limits of small game hunting with them. I use both lead shot, cast lead slug, cast buckshot and swan shot, plus on the Steel side of the spectrum I use crossman BB, and #S220 steel sand blasting media for dove hunting.

I have the Dave Canterbury insert for 209 primers, plus I cut the plastic off damaged shells and just use the brass portion to hold 209 primer. I have tested commercial wads with black powder shotgun and made my own felt, wax paper, cloth wads to place between powder and shot. It is a new fun way to shoot
