I'm just about ready to order a 24" 1-10 (Shilen) barrel and was wondering what this caliber is like to load for. What is the reasonable distance I could expect to get out of it for coyotes and deer sized game?
 
If your rebarreling why not go for the AI? My 25-06AI approaches 257 velocities. I use 85gr NBT for yotes and 120 SGK for deer. Reasonable ranges? Depends on you, I have taken coyotes at over 400 yds in good conditions and I know people have shot at lot farther than that.
Very forgiving cartridge to load for.
 
Hodgdon doesn't show the AI on their website. What gains are achieved by going to the AI version?
 
The AI will go 150 to 200fps more depending on bullet weight. The Sierra manual has data for the 25-06AI. I am using RL19 for the 85gr and RL22 for the 120gr. My Cooper has a 26" tube which I would also reccomend if you go with the AI. Easily sub moa with every load I tried but seems to like them on the heavy side.

Approaches 257 Weatherby velocities, way beyond 257 Roberts. And then you could also go for maybe the ultimate......25 WSM. I have just the plain old vanilla 25-06 and love it. After a 1000 rds of max or near max loads, it's super sharp accuracy is waning slightly. Still around moa tho.

Ackley is around a 10% increase in case capacity with a 3-5% increase in velocity. Reduced bolt thrust and lack of requirment to trim in most cases is a spin off bonus, you can also still fire factory ammo out of the cut chamber in a pinch at the ballistics of the parent cartridge. Also most cases you can just buy a LEE collet die and neck size the ackley case.
 
The .25-06 will kill coyotes WAY farther than most guys can hit them. Deer, too.

It's all about the bullet and the shooter, not so much the engine platform.

Yes and lots of dedication and practice.....Still a great platform, use one for my windy day coyote rig....
