OK guys, I'm not set up to reload YET.... but I have acquired a Winchester 94AE in .307 Win. I have a fair amount of factory 180 grain power point. I'm curious when the time comes that I have empty brass as to what it can be loaded up with. Would the Hornady 160 grain FTX either 30-30 or .308 MX work in the brass?? Wondering if it's possible to boost the .307's performance.

Do not use 308 win data for your 307 unless you are working up from light to "got something in my eye".
308 dies and a 30-30- shell holder are what you need to start, information is available in the Hornaday manual.

You have to be conscious of the overall length. You're pretty much limited to bullets intended for the .30-30 or the cartridge is to long to cycle through the 94 action.,

I haven't tried the 308 marlin FTX bullets in mine yet to see how the overall length when seated to the cannelure yet. I'm not at home to check the length that will function through model 94 but I think it is 2.500-2.550". The difference between the 30-30 FTX bullet and the one meant for the 30-30 is the position of the cannelure and also in the jacket construction. The 308 marlin one being of a much more stouter construction to withstand the higher impact velocity. I have tried the 170 grain Speer hot cores but found that I had much more schrapnel compared to the 170 grain Hornady interlocks. My velocity using the Hornady 170 and H4895 was 2476. I have also tried the Barnes 150 FN to a velocity of 2550 and found them to be an excellent performing bullet also. The only game i have shot with the above mentioned bullets is deer. On another forum they have used the 170 Hornadys extensive on feral donkeys in Australia and gotten excellent results. Hope that helps you a bit

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. Just looking to see what the full potential of this gun can be. The standard 180 grain flat point bullet looks to be fine in and about 125 yards but longer shot trajectory might be a challenge. That was my thought process behind the FTX rounds as a substitute.

i used to load 170 hornady or speer fp with 43.5grns of varget 2525fps it was a good load for me. also 150hornady rn behind 45grns varget for 2625fps. both out of 20 inch barrel.
