I need help with 1/9 twist AR with 55gr FMJBT.

Hey all. I got an AR a couple of weeks ago and now it to start reloading for it. This is my first one so I know nothing about them. I've shot some American Eagle 55gr and am getting 1 inch at 25m so I'm not overly impressed with them. I haven't used iron sights all that much so that could be the problem too.

1) Are the 55gr'ers good enough for 100m and what kind of accuracy should I get with it. If not, what gr of bullet should I be using???

2) Is Reloader 7 or 15 the best powder to use in my Lee Loadmaster??? If not, what is good.

Any other suggestions are welcome...

what brand is the AR? and what is the Barrel lenght? Do you have a scope?

55 grs are great for all AR's, but you can get better performance out of different bullets.

I like Varget Its works well from 50 grs to 69 bullets in all my AR's I stay away from ball powders and I keep the speed down under 3100fps.

I do not use reloader 7/15 but a friend does and he likes it.

My AR is a 1:8 and my 180B a 1:9. The biggest factor is the quality and length of the bullet. You should be able go from 50gr to 68gr no problem. The 180B likes both Hornady 50gr Vmax and 68gr BTHP. I am unfamiliar with the reloader series powders but with gas guns you have to use the right powders, slow is bad. I use Varget, and WC735 surplus from Higginsons.

The rifle is a Bushmaster XM-15 with a 16 in HBar. No scope yet...

Why do you not like ball powders, just preference???

I was getting 3 inch groups @ 100 with my iron sights using 55gr AE. But I recently switched to a scope.

Yeah, I think that a scope will solve the accuracy problem as I just not that good with the iron's :(

I've got a 1 lb of IMR 4064, too slow for the AR???

I do not use ball powders because, originally the M16's when they were developed back in the laste 50's and early 60's jammed in combat. The main reason at the time was to blame ball powder and build up in the gas system. The report I read (I forgot what it was becuase it was years ago ) Seem to make sense and I stuck with that.

I know I can go to the range use 500+ rounds with varget and have no issues with my gas system or with build up (to the point of a failure )

if you add a scope and lighten up your trigger a bit you can easily do 1" groups with that gun.

enjoy and break it in, once you get more familiar with it, you will be surprised what it can do.

For what its worth, here are a few of my favorite AR loads that will work with your barrel twist rate. If these loads donèt shot well in your AR, its cursed.

52 gr SMK
25 gr H335

52 gr SMK
26.5 Win 748

69 gr SMK
25 gr Varget
