I recently pick up a 1895 Win in 405 was wondering if anyone else reloads for it? I was thinking of having Mountain Molds make me up a mold for it in the 300 gn range.

I load for mine, 56 grains of IMR 3031 behind the Barnes 300 grains bullet does a fine job on a moose. I have also used the Hornady 300 Grains FP but have not shot anything with it. Mine shot pretty decently with some cast bullets that I bought at a Gun Show but I forgot what they were.

My old Lyman Handbook of Cast Bullets liststhe following loads with a 290 gr cast bullet:

25 grs 2400 = 1500 fps
32 grs 2400 = 1850 fps
40 grs 3031 = 1500 fps
45 grs 3031 = 1775 fps
43 grs 4064 = 1550 fps
48 grs 4064 = 1800 fps
16 grs Unique = 1460 fps

I slugged the barrel and it came out at .413 so I would need at least a .414 sized bullet. There is an RCBS bullet mold that is made for the 416 that could work according to some other sources I found but I am not sure it would chamber unsized so if anyone casts with this bullet I would like to try a couple so I know what size will chamber correctly.

Thanks for the load info, I have also found some info and the more I find the better.
