Reloading for Trap

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea or not.

I am a noob to reloading and have NEVER thought of doing it for shotguns, but I would consider it if it is economical.

It is becoming less economical as the price of shot has gone thru the roof lately. I recently purchased a few bags of reclaimed shot for $30.00/ 25 lbs. Here is my cost list of actual prices:
$30.00 for 25 lbs reclaimed shot
$110.50 for 5000 DRXL-1 wads (1oz shot wads)
$36.75 for 1000 Cheddite primers
$165.00 for 8 lbs of reddot powder.
free hulls from the trap range
OK to do the math...
for 5000 rnds:my loads for my gun (Alliant powder site says 18 grns my bushing drops 17.7)
$375-shot (1oz loads)
$110.50 (drxl-1)
$183.75 (cheddite primers)
$260.76 (17.7 gr reddot)
$0.00 (WAA wads)

$930.01
5000 rnds =200 bxs of 25
total per box of 25 is $4.65 That is for my load
 
ITs fun, it's relaxing, it increases satisafaction. It will cost more than you planned. Targets shells are about the same price as reloading, unless you can scrounge hulls, buy reclaimed shot, and buy primers from guys that don't reload anymore.
 
Yeah, you can save some money reloading for trap, but you better shop around for components to do it.

I load my own trap loads, but the only reason I can make it really pay is making my own shot.
 
I would not reload if I did not make my own shot, with the price of shot so high not worth it to roll your own, unless you want a new hobby, but thats a different story.
 
The savvy shooter can purchase Fed. Top Gun factory loads for $4.95, I don't use 'em, but do the math. Even top of the line Win. AA's at $8.00 a box works when you sell the empties, which are in demand as opposed to crappy empties.
 
If you want to cut the cost down ... you can always try to reclaim some shot from the trap range (if the club will let you ...). It will not be perfectly round anymore, but for trap, that's OK. We have a few trap shooters at our club that do this.
 
One advantage is you can load shells that are not available commercially.

I load 7/8oz at about 1200fps in 12 ga. Virtually no recoil in my Cynergy Sporting. Next to none in my Citori or my Bernadelli Gamecock SxS.

I had loaded 1oz for years, dropped to 7/8 while recovering from bypass surgery, never went back. My scores (sporting clays) are the same as when I shot 1oz, and I shoot better with my reloads than 1 1/8oz factory Gun Clubs. My son shoots equally well with all of them.

By dropping to 7/8oz, using Promo powder (a bit dirty), and buying in bulk I'm in at about $3.85 a box. Plus, it's therapeutic cranking out 4 flats of shells every month or so.

BTW, the cycle my Win 1400 and a friend's Maxxus no problem.
 
It is hardly worth it anymore the price of powders and shot are so high and the target loads can be bought prety cheap now. I also found that if u shoot alot of trap unless u have prgressive loaders or something more then a one step loader ull spend way to much time loading shells.

what do they use to reclaim the shot ?

Where the heck are you guys finding target ammo for less than $70.00 a flat? FS

As far as I know (never been there when they did it) , they just use a flat shovel and lightly shovel the top inch or two off dirt into a bucket. From there .. I don't know if they screen it or what .. I'll try to remmeber to ask on Sunday when I'm there .. if I can find some trap guys around.

For me since I shoot every gauge from 410 to 10ga it is the only way to go.
Yes you may be able to find some 12ga factory loads close to the same price as reloading but reloading is part of the game.Mixing wads and trying different powders to get that perfect load for your gun, etc etc is a lot of fun.
Nothing like a nice snowy night with the girls out and CCR cranked to relax and turn out 1000 rounds or so. Love it.:)
