Reloading incident. Remeber to check before seating bullets.

a little f**k up today at the bench.

I have the habit of taper crimping all my auto handgun ammo.
Since I do not have a taper crimper for my 10mm I decided to use my sizer with decapping rod removed.

Bad idea LOL
It reduced neck tension to 0 newtons, and I could pull the bullets out with my bare hands. Just a FYI...
Anyway I'm sure no ones dumb enough (besides me) to try that
 
Doesn't hurt to weigh the finished cartridges on a grain scale either....not all cases weigh the same, so they may not all be exactly the same, but if you're missing 40-60 grains in one finished round.....

Its a good final check and doesn't take too long....

Just a little bit high???? Yea I'd think so, even though this was could have resulted in injury (I would think) I couldn't help but laugh when I read it:HR:, Hope you don't try that again
 
first time out with my new to me sks with czech surplus ammo, buddy had a click and no fire, so he pulled the bolt back and blammmm she fired, sure woke us up in a hurry. found out later that the bolt wasnt sliding all the way forward. took em apart and reallllyyyy cleaned the gun, woke us up in a hurry
 
i reload with a single stage lee press ( i will soon step into the 21st centery) with my 9mm recipe i use 5.1grains of VV N350 and hornady 125gr jhp .356 the powder charged fills my case almost 3/4 of the way up i have yet to hear horror storys of this happening in a single stage

what happened to the wait 30- 60 seconds or is that just a myth i was tought ?

The only way it can happen is if somebody is not paying attention to what they are doing. It can happen just as easy on a single stage press, don't kid yourself.
 
I charge the cases and put them into a loading block 20 at a time and shine a flashlight down into the case to see if all the powder levels are the same
I've been using Titegroup for my 38 but will switch to Trail Boss, can't double charge. I bet you could get a 3x charge of Titegroup into a 38 Special case

Just had this happen to me last week...first time in 28 years of reloading. Charging the first of 100 or so 357 mag cases,phone rang,damn telemarketers,went back to charging the cases. Checked with a flashlight like I always do when done. Wouldnt you know it,the first case I charged had a double charge in it. Instead of 7.5 grains of powder I had 15 in it and still room to seat a slug on top.

When putting powder in a case I always put the funnel on top,charge and move it to the next case for powder. But that one little distraction was all it took for a double charge. Glad I found it b4 hand. I just dumped the powder in the garbage and put the case in the mtm box as a reminder to me that you always check things and never ever take any thing for granted.
 
you can never be too careful, this winter i was telling johnone that i blew up my new chinese sig 40 by double charging it, the gun handled the e xplosion, expanded the chamber, expanded the slide, the rest will be a parts gun, after40 years of reloading, it can happen if one doesn't pay attention
 
I can't say never anymore.
I've loaded 1000's of round without a hiccup, until yesterday, "click" no bang. The very last round had a backwards primer. It sucked bad because my wife was shooting the gun for the first time, she missed the 600 gong 4 times and wanted just one more chance, "I know I'll hit it this time". She was all set, determined, and .......CLICK......sonofa#####!!!!

I felt so bad, I rolled some more this morning. She's going to bang the gong this afternoon.
 
I see there hasn't been a post on this thread in awhile, so I'll chime in with my 2 cents. I'm a novice handloader and my first powder for loading 357 magnum was Titegroup. The guy at the store recommended it to me and I didn't know any better. Titegroup is a great powder, but it is very low volume. I loaded a couple of hundred rounds with it and everything went off with the proper amount of bang.

However, one day I dropped a double charge into a case just to see what it would look like. I couldn't tell the difference between proper load and a double charge. I then dropped a triple charge into the case and even then, I could only "sort of" tell the difference. Needless to say, I now have a mostly full bottle of Titegroup that I'm not using.

I now use IMR Trailboss. It fills up enough of the case that a double charge would be spilling over the top.
 
The true cause was never determined but it was catastrophic rifle failure. Bullet in the bore? Wrong powder? Over charged?
Apparently one shot as fired and this was the second. A novice shooter? A novice reloader?
The condition of the shooter has not been reported on for some time but the last word was he might lose the eye.

 
Every reloader I know has forgot to put the powder in at least once. Maybe it was the beer. I have done it once with my 7MM and I had nothing to pop the lead out
while out hunting. Luckily, I usually take 2 or 3 rifles along.
Another time, I somehow contaminated the primers while loading 30-30 bullets. When I went to test fire, the hammer would fall "click" and a split second later the powder lit. Happened to all 50 rounds I loaded that day. Maybe just bad primers or -- the list is endless.
