Hey folks,

I want to start building reloads for my SVT 40 and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good powder and hopefully some load data for punching paper. I suspect that most shooting will be from 100m, but the range also has a 200m bench as well if I feel brave...

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions you can provide!

P.S.; A big thanks goes out to Henry at Budget Shooter Supply for finding me brass when it couldn't be found anywhere on the east coast!

I run imr4350 in privi/Graf brass. Charge weight is 53.5 grains under a Sierra .311 174 grain matchking using federal large rifle primers. Rifle is a polish m44 carbine. Work up to this load as it is on the hotter side.

How are you guys liking the PRVI brass? I'm tempted by the price but Ive heard complaints about thin necks in other calibers.

I've loaded my privi 54r brass many many times without a hitch. I also have Graf and lapua brass.

I load 7.62x54r for a mosin only so I won't give loads as I'm sure it's different in a gas gun.

OP, one thing you should know is SVT's can eat brass so you may not get too many reloads out of your cases.

X2 what DAR said. Thats about where I settle on powder charge.

However I personally favor a .312 bullet because I shoot them in my Mosins too. I find the SVT can chew the brass up quite a bit, but they shoot great. Start your loads low, work them up slow, and make sure to slug the barrel.

I wouldn't recommend Federal(soft) primers for an SVT(semi-auto), too much risk of slam fire(when there is no firing pin return spring). Carefully seat primers below flush, and never slam the bolt on a chambered cartridge(ie not feeding from the magazine). Have fun, be safe.

Thanks to all for your time and input; it's very much appreciated!

Thanks also for the heads-up on the brass and primers! I've been shooting surplus steel cased ammo up to now and haven't looked closely at the cases. I love the rifle, but figure that I could get better results with home-grown loads.

Regarding barrel-slugging; that's a process that I've never done before. Is there a source for slug blanks and if not, what do you use?

Lead fishing weights (sinkers). cheap and efficient, some good youtube videos on this.

Slugging is easy. Clean everything out of the bore, copper and all. Tap either an oversize lead bullet or lead fishing sinker through the barrel. You can use a light oil to lubricate. They tap through easily. Then measure with calipers or mic. Being a 4 groove barrel its easy to measure, 5 groove rifles like LE's are a bit harder.

Thanks supernova; that's good to know! I've been wondering how much effort is needed to get the slug through the barrel.

Good luck in your endeavors. Personally won't use brass in my SVT-40 since it destroys brass. Tried some out and 7 out of 10 necks cracked on resizing so now I Mexican match using surplus steel cases or just shoot the surplus as is.
