OUCH!!

DAMN That hurt!

Well after loading at least 20,000 rounds on my Lee 1000 I finally had my first and hopefully last.........KABOOM!!

The primer feed jammed..........always a sore point with me..

I had just pushed the primer stack forward a bit when my hand slipped on the ram handle and BOOM!

The primer feed slide blew to bits....Lucky for me I had removed most of the primers to find out what was jammed so there were only about 5 in the slide.

Right now I have a nice bruise on the tip of my left index finger........and a better bruise on my ego....
I have put down about 1200 .45 acp in the past two days.....guess I am done for a while.

Time to start looking at a new Hornady AP.

Glad your alright! Not enough like you in our corner of the world. You'll like the Hornady, if you want to try one out, your welcome to travel up stratford way and give mine a test drive.

And people make fun of me for doin it one at a time. ;-)
I use the Lee Ram Prime... the only piece of Lee Equip I own. Actually I have two, permanently set up for large/small. I used to switch, but lost one of the little parts during a change so just bought an extra unit, they're cheap.

It really doesn't take very long doin it o/a/a/t... I will never understand why people mess with these things in a tube etc.

For anyone who doesn't think primers are a big deal, get dressed up in a pair of glasses and ear plugs / face mask / gloves/ bunker etc and whack one with a hammer, then imagine a hundred of them going of when you DONT expect it.

Glad you're ouchy isn't serious. Now get back to it!
(I just finished loading 80 rounds of .44 magnum... yeee haw!)

Cocked-N-Locked....thanks for the offer, Silentrunner lives only 20 minutes away and has offered me the use of his LNL-AP till I get back up and running.

I am surprised that there is not more damage to my finger.....

The last time I had an issue with a primer I had to perform self surgery to remove it! But that was an entirely different situation! LOL!

That would be why they sell scotch whiskey in large bottles. 1) as anaesthetic, and 2) to make the self surgery seem like a good idea! :D. By the way, remind me not to be around you (or your fingers) while your priming:D

One thing I do like about the LNL, the primer in use is isolated from the drop tube and the tube itself has a steel surround, proper seamless pipe, not sheet metal, around the aluminium primer guide. Even it the whole stack went, it's all going straight up, well clear of my noggin. I have noticed that is doesn't seem to like winchester large pistol primers though, seems when you get down to 4-5 in the tube it wants to hang up as it feeds to the slider.....
 
I never had one go boom in my Lee 1000 when I had it, lots of primer jams though that's one of the reasons I went to Dillon, but I did on my 650.
While sizing/depriming, the head punched off the dead primer and when I was seating the new one I was thinking this ones a little tight and then it went boom, rather loud but it was the only one that went off. Flash went through the case I guess. I trust the finger and ego will be well in time for the Triangle this weekend.
 
the key to all lee products is to recharge the hopper when you get down to the tube- this means always that you'll have about 10-12 primers in the tube, but far fewer if any problems - every time i've had a folded. twisted, or sideways primer or one that's been inverted unless i haven't watched which way i load the hopper, it's been when the hopper is empty and i'm working on the last 10 or so- i've got about a 15 degree forward tilt on both my pistol 1000 and that helps with the gravity feed- it's the weight of the primers in the tube that advances the feed- i've also got a couple of autoprimes that i use if there's anything "funny" happens to the feed

I have loaded thousands upon thousands of 9mm and 38 rounds in my LeePro 1000 .. once a long time ago .. I had one go off on the upstroke .. scared the crap outa momma bear cause all was quiet then a big bang from the basement.. After a while you kinda get a feel for the press .. if your brass is clean and any of the primer crimp from military brass is removed it works just fine .. I have never used anything but winchester primers. On another note I picked up a large carrier off EBay.. so I could do my .44s on the progressive. It works but I guess its an older model carrier and it drops a primer with every movement of the handle .. unfortunately it doesn't have the little release arm .. makes it a bit of a challenge when using the case feed tubes and you miss a turn you end up with a primer in the shell holder with no case.. sometimes its easier to do em one at a time.

i don't know how much older you can get than some of my guys- 1989- more than likely if you've got a screw and wire between stations 1 and two, it's missing or been removed- a simple replacement-go to the lee site and order th parts you need from higgenson
 
Yeah I hear what you are saying .. however I have compared it to the Lee Pro 1000 that I have for the small shells.. The small shell carrier has a plastic cam that is activated by the case that allows the primer to be released and placed on the primer seat there are slots in the carier for a wire clip that is moved by the plastic cam .. comparing it to the one i bought from EBay the slots for the wire clip just ain't there
 
that's extremely strange,maybe they were missed in production or something-or flashed over- either way a new carrier is only 20 bucks for the casting and you swap the parts over- incidentally, the carriers for both large and small pistol on the lee 1000 are identical, with only the primer trough and pins being different sizes- and you can swap back and forth at will
