Reloading Low-Recoil Slugs

Would it be advisable to take a Remington 2 3/4 Gun Club 1&1/8 oz #8 ( 3 dram ) target load, cut the crimp off take out all the shot and the wad, cut the pedals off the wad and put the wad back in over the primer, put a 1oz rifled slug over that wad, another wad-less pedal and place that in over the slug?

I made 5 today. The whole thing fits perfectly into the shot shell. Put a little glue to seal the top wad in. Nothing is loose inside the shell.

Just wanted a cheaper way to shoot some low recoil slugs.

i would strongly advise you dont fire them, you have no idea the pressures it will make, loading for shotgun cartridgs is tricky, loads in manuals must be followed component by component

i mean if the load manual called for a winchester hull, a remington power piston wad
25grns of H110 powder, and a 1oz rifled slug
and you had all those components , yes thats correct

you just cant swap out components and powder and shot charge weights to make a low recoiling slug

what you can do is use black powder, and fiber wads and shotcups, and cast some lyman pellet style slugs

black powder wouldnt build up enough pressure to hurt the guns of today at all
its just real dirty to clean, i use this slug in my sxs guns and older single shots
a little less ommph than regular smokeless loads

if you want low recoil loads for slugs, consult with a load book for shotguns and look up loads that will be on the lower end of the power spectrum
they will have loads for that kind of thing

the reason i use the black powder is because i can mix and match components fr better patterning without going into dangerous pressure levels
with smokless loads, evn changing a wad can mean the point of a barrel busting

yes, sounds like a plan, its one thing if a manual tells you ,that you could substitute a winchester primer for a remington, or a federal wads for a winchester, but never assume on your own, especially with a shotgun!

if you want to try your hand at slugs with black powder , id be happy to help, i load em all the time

you could take a regular plastic hull, remove the smokeless powder
replace it with a measured amount of 2f black powder
to measure this you need a black powder measure a person would use for muzzleloading, as black powder is measured by volume, not weight!!!
onced you have the powder in there, you can firmly seat the plastic shotwad over the powder, however i do recommend you use a cardboard wad between the black powder and the plastic wad, reason being that black powder will melt the wad and cause stringing of plastic in the barrel
with a cardboard wads about 1/8" thick between them, it puts a barrier between the wad and powder and is cleaner, my load for 12 gauge slugs is usally about 80-90 grns and a lyman pellet style slug that weighs 525grns
it pushes along at around 1150 fps, plenty power and accurate up to 50 yrds
clean up after shooting is with hot soapy water first in barrel, then dry and oil

wile HUNTERROD make a very good point about mix and match of components and also about using the black which sounds cool, I will have to try that.
I have experiment with lee slugs and using Winchester universal trap loads from wall-mart, 2 3/4", 1 1/8oz #8. I open the crimp, empty and reform it round, insert several cards to bring up the slug height in the shot cup also for better crimps, insert slug( currently I have been using lee 7/8oz drivekey slug) and then recrimp, cost is about .30 cents each, and my lead is free. I was getting aprox. 3" at 50m, Im still refining as there is an occasional flier, but I think the wad is gripping the slug at firing and destabilizing it downrange. I will trim the petals to the waist of the slug and see how that performs.
Now dont take my word for it though, all this just works for me, but there is a few out there that have had similar successes with the same.
 
I use a Lee 1 oz drive key slug, WW hull, cheddite primer, and 19.5 gr. of SP-81, Clay buster lightining wad, normal crimp. Very moderate recoil and report(900 fps). SP-81 is a small lot of Hodgdon powder that was supposed to be between Universal and International Clays in burn speed that Higginson had on for cheap several years ago.

That slug is designed to be shot with a wad...might rattle a bit going down the barrel if you cut the pedals off the wad.
 
There a WHOLE Post about this, and YES lots of memeber including myself do this all the time. Heck i just made 100. Very safe to shoot!

Using the el cheapo Walmart #8 1oz 2 3/4 sheels, NO NEED to cut anything. Just use a small screw driver, open the crimp, pour out the shot, they use a simple size 13 wrench to smooth out the mouth and if you have a load all ii from LEE ($60) Just put a Lee 1oz or any 1 oz slug into it, and recrimp the top. DONE, perfect closeure, no need for anything else.

Quite accurate up to 50yards, after that, it drops considerably, very low recoil and feeds great in my Mossy 500 and Rem autoloader.

762nato- no im not cutting them completely off, but trimming them to the waist of the slug plus cards.
CRAZYLOCH- +1 to that, that lee loader has been quite the godsend.
Ya mine with the 7/8oz function fine in my friends rem 1100 aswell.
 
I use the 7/8 slug, it is a bit short in the shotcup so the cards bring up the height and make the best recrimp, otherwise it sinks in and looks bad. My next loading session I will try the 1oz and see if I need to trimming, I wont need as many cards as the other.
