Is one better than the next? What do I look for in a good manual?

Buy them all. Can never have to much information. I personally use the manual for each of the bullet manufacturers I use. Hornady bullets - use Hornady manual, Sierra bullets - use Sierra manual etc. Just remember start on the low end and work up regardless of manual.

Even used manual are good to go: the load data hasn't really changed for the most popular brands of power. Buy a few and consult them for their data points. You will discover that between your manuals, you will end up with a range of loads. Like Blackbriar said, start at the low end and work your way up (usually by 0.5gr increments), unless you're like me and just start at the middle and work my way up Stop when you see signs of overpressure or when you discover your gun's preferred load.

The most common first books that are recommended are the Lyman and the ABC's of reloading.

I use Hornady, Hodgdon, Lyman, Sierra, Barnes, Lee's modern reloading, couple of editions of the A,B,C's of reloading, several other books by reloading authors. About 15 in all. As was stated, can't have too much info.
