Reloading pistol brass

For 9mm, the only sorting I do is to separate IVI or or other surplus casings that might have crimped in primers. Too many times a loading session has been halted because of a crushed primer. I also look for berdan primed cases as well. It prevents broken decapping pins.
For the .45 ACP you will find a percentage of range pick ups with SP primers... SURPRISE!! Luckily I have a buddy who likes to use them so I save them up and we swap brass every now and then.

I sort them after I clean a batch. I toss them in my recycle bin along with split cases and spent primers. The eventually wind up at the salvage yard for $$$$,. My chrony tells me there is no difference in velocity averages using mixed or sorted brass in any of the pistol cartridges I shoot. For what I do with a gun there is no practical difference in the results I achieve. I can think of a few shooting disciplines where it would have but I don't shoot them.

I should add, I toss S&B and NT brass. The S&B almost invariably end up with high primers or pinched primers. I just don't think it is worth the effort to use them in 9MM or 39spl. The cases just go in the scrap pile.

Take Care

Bob
