Not sure if this should've gone into the Reloading category.. but here goes anyways.

Are the different caliber die sets and whatnot interchangeable between the different brand press kits? ie; Rock Chucker, Lee, Hornady?

And what press kit is good enough for a beginner but will hold it's value and usefullness for a few years down the road?

I'll probably be reloading both rifle and handgun calibers maybe even messing with reloading steel shell casings if I get brave.

I'm leaning a bit toward an RCBS kit.. not sure which is better. It's expensive though.. is it better quality than the Lee Anniversary kit?

Andy

Here on EE Dell Sellin has Lyman reloading kit with everything you need to start for $ 270 I belive. I bought one for friend of mine at Salmon Arm show and he is more than happy.

i have both rcbs and lee, they both work fine with my lee press. lee dies in my opinion are a better value than rcbs. you get a shell holder and factory crimp die for the same price. their carbide pistol dies are also the same price as normal rcbs dies.

Thanks guys... that helps out alot. Some places on the net as well as gun show have certain brands of dies and when they're in the caliber that I'd like,.. I always wondered if they would work in another press.

Thanks again,

Andrew

I bought a Lee Classic oval cast iron press and have a mix of dies for it including RCBS, Lee, Reddng and recently RCBS Cowboy dies to load cast too. They all fit. Standard thread so buy with confidence. All the same thread for single presses. Note that when you look in a catalog like Wholesale or Russells there is no mention in the myriad list of brands and dies that one will fit this press or that, right?

Stormy that was just dripping with sarcasm y'know...

But to the topic at hand.. Older Lee and Hornady dies (and possibly others) are a little shorter/are not fully threaded and have thicker lock rings..This MAY cause some compatibility issues with newer presses..

You can alleviate some of this with thinner locking rings.

I have this problem right now with a set of Lee 38 dies in a Hornady LNL bushing. I'm barely catching the threads because of the bushing.

Never thought about a thinner lock ring. duh!

Are the Hornady rings thinner?

I know that Dillon sells thin rings.. I don't know about other companies they may..

I really like redding reloading gear, there dies are very nice, there presses are very rigid. Rcbs presses are quite rigid as well. I would spend a little extra now and get a good press because you will have it for years and years.
