Since this is going to be my first reload, I was hoping you guys can help me out.

1) I need to purchase some projectiles for my 9mm and 40 cal. What type grain do you guys like the best? I want to stick with Berrys bullets since there prices are the lowest i've seen.


2) What powder should I use? I'd like to find some locally to save myself from paying the Hazardous Material charge. Im in the GTA.


3) do I need to crimp?

I was just at Ellwood Epps this morning and picked up 1,000 Cam Pro 180 grain 40 cal bullets. After a quick Google search, I see Shawn at Brant Shooting Sports has them listed on his website as well.
Try Winchester 231 under the 180 grains bullets in your 40 S&W.I'll put money on it that you will not find Berry's at a better price. If you do, I want the dealer info to cover my loss. ;)
I dont have the recipe at hand and do not want to quote the wrong weight. A little research, I'm sure will give you the info you need from there.

Those projectile things are called "bullets".

The size is referred to as "bullet weight".

You do not show your location on your profile. If we knew where you lived (Ottawa, Toronto, Windsor) we could suggest places with good prices near you.

When asking for loading suggestions, mention the gun you have. Different guns have different OALs and preferences.

I spent the day testing 40 cal ammo in 4 different pistols. I just used TiteGroup because a fast powder often makes the best target load. As it happened, the 155gr SWC (lead) did much better than the 180, in all guns. 3.2 gr was best in 3 and 3.8 best in the other.

The suggestion of 231 is a good one in my experience. The best all round powder I have used is IMR 7625. It meters well and is medium speed.

In my OP I stated GTA. I am planning on using a recipe out of my lees 2nd edition book.

The guns Im using are both S&W M&Ps 9mm and 40 cal.

1) I don't load for the Short & Weak :D, but for my 9mm Shadow, I load 147gr over 3.8gr of Win231. I prefer heavier bullets as I find they are somewhat less "snappy" that lighter ones. I also use W231 for my .45ACP loads.

2) As I mentioned, I prefer W231 for my 9mm and .45ACP loads. I find it consistent and well performing enough. I've also used Tightgroup and liked it also, although I found zero difference in accuracy between the 2 (in 3 of my pistols: the Shadow, a 1911 in .45 and an M&P in .45 as well)

3) Yes, but only a mild crimp. You didn't mention it, but if you're using a 3 die set, the 3rd die will usually be your crimping die. The crimp in semi auto platforms keeps the bullet from being seated further back into the case under the force of recoil, which can lead to dangeround levels of pressure if the bullet gets seated too far back. Not only semi-auto pistols, but semi-auto rifles as well should use crimped rounds.
 
Sorry. I missed the GTA reference.

I buy lead cast bullets of the DRG brand from the maker at his shop in Guelph. Cost around $30/500. Call Frank at 519-824-5040.

I load for the M&P in both 9 and 40. In 9mm Frank's 135gr LRN (Lead Round Nose) works well with many powders. I have quite a few 9mm pistols and in all of them the 135 works better than the 125. A bit softer recoil, too.

he sells out of bullets from time to time and is not always home, so call ahead if you want to drop by.

In 40 cal he sells a 180 gr FP (Flat Point). In my M& P this only works well with 3.2gr of TiteGroup.

I have found the most versatile bullet in 40 S&W is the 155gr SWC. Frank does not make one. I get these from R &R bullets in Kingston. Rick drops them off in Toronto from time to time. last time I got 4,000 from him. Glad I did. 613-320-0155
