Reloading shot shells with steel shot

You're darn right. Which hulls should I eye for mostly. I know in time Federal and Remington did change hulls build and abandoning that route I'm not aware anymore which are suitable. BP manual has very few load recipes with Federal PB. It looks like I will have to find again the RSI manuals and start digging.

Also, you can substitute primers if you know what you are doing. But if you just start out reloading ..... it is probably saver to stick to published recipes.

Here is an article that explains a bit more about primer substitution ....

http://www.armbrust.acf2.org/primersubs.htm

In the example that Tom Armbrust used and tested ..... when he substituted a Winchester primer for a Cheddite one, the pressure went only up by 870 psi.

3macs1, the Cheddite primer issues that you had .... when was that .... how many years ago? I am just wondering? As far as I know the commercial Challenger ammunition today is using Cheddite hulls and primers ... and many people shoot those by the flat ...

So, I am wondering if Cheddite might have resolved those issues?

I have been reloading primed Cheditte hulls for a couple of years now .... and have not had a problem yet with them.

Component substitution in steel shot shell loads is not advisable with the high pressure that they operate at . Low pressure lead target loads can be played with some research even then it's iffy. As for Cheddite primers I use them with no issues other than they are oversize .

Sorry I just seen you post
Yes it actually goes back I would guess to the very first load Hummasons brought into canada
I remember seeing them for like 19.99 per 1000 and added 5000 to my order
Dimensions were not even close since as I know now they were UK specs but there was quite a few dead ones and hard as hell on firing pins
They say they fixed it so I tried another batch and yes dimensions were better and they said now to north american specs but they were not
Still hard as hell and reminded me of a cci cup but fired OK so I used them for a few years and then out of the blue another bad batch not even close to the right tolerances so I never bought any more after
I think I still have close to 10,000 however of those old ones here both in red and black flash holes
Take care
