Hi, everyone

I have been reloading my .308 using 45 gr of Varget, with a 150 gr Sierra matchking bullet. This load gives me great groups .5 MOA at 100. My rifle is a Weatherby vanguard2 range certified. I would like to start shooting 178 Amax but can't find any info on the twist rate of my rifle. I know how to use the cleaning rod to figure it out. But if my rifle turns out to be a 1-12 twist, Will a 1-12 twist stabilize a 178 gr bullet? And if so anyone have any load suggestions using Varget or IMR 4064?

My 26" 1-12" barrel stabilizes the 178 amax no problem. Every barrel is diferent though. You'll have to try. Yours being 1-10" doesn't mean it'll like the amax either. Chances are it will though.

1:12 is fine in Calgary, and even 1:13 would work. Load range for Varget according to Hodgdon is 41 min to 45 grains (compressed) max. You have been given the Berger Calculator link. Here is a bullet database to get the length of the bullet. The Hornady site has the bullet G1 BC.

Berger makes it a lot easier for their bullets by giving you a table with the twist requirements for all their bullets. It is also on each box.

With the perfect atmospheric conditions it would stabilize but if your closer to sea level and other factors it may not you be safer with 1/11 and even better 1/10 twist

Give the new ELD match projectiles a try , the A-max tip melts at 400-500 meters causing deformation and less then repeatable results

I just got hold of a box of the new 208g ELD match rounds... From the looks of the new tip they use - no melting and better G1 rating .... .690 for goodness sake !!!

G7 BC's are more accurate then G1 . G7 BC is used for a modern bullet

Yeah I'm aware of the two ratings - most manufacturers post both references.

Here's a good comparison for OP of the amax vs ELD match

I'm using the 168 amax in my 24" savage 308.
And leverevolution powder.
Velocities are pretty high and I found a node on the high end. Rips a ragged hole
Mt chrono broke so I'm trying to figure out my ballistics via the actual drop. Found a good book on how that's done.
The eld is a great option. If use the, if I could find them in 168
