Reloading: what NOT to do

One thing that I caught myself with once...

If you smoke, remove your smoking materials from the reloading area before you start.

Once I grabbed a cigar out of habit and was reaching for the lighter when I realized that I was seating bullets and there were charged cases on the table beside me.

Now the smokes are in another room, when I reload and take a break at the end of a step, I leave the reloading room and have a smoke.

safety glasses for what? to protect you from the fireball when your hopper goes off? wouldnt the glasses melt to your face anyway? or is it to protect you from the shrapnel?.. I dont know, a bomb going off in my face and chest area would leave one hell of a nasty hole.. but at least they can transplant my cornea?

seriously though:
after you trim and debur your cases, dont rub the case mouth with your finger to see if its smooth.. its actually sharp enough to cut you at that point. seen it done.

Funny, I was just about to recommend that the OP get a -stuck case remover- with his initial purchase.

I'm not sure how the voodoo works; but when I have a stuck case remover in the house, I never stick a case; but if I loan it out... it's about 50-50 that I'll stick a case.

Do not assume that any load listed in a manual will be safe in your gun.

Do not substitute any component without working up the load again.

Never get too comfortable while reloading. After thousands of rounds this can lead to complacency. Not a good thing!!!

Oh yeah, and don't drink Russian Standard while reloading.....don't ask........

I might do things a little different than others but here goes..

Tumble brass with spent primers still in place.

Decap and resize then clean primer pockets and trim if required.

Once the case is preped sit down and prime all your cases. Place primed cases in loading block.

Set up seating die in press and place a secomd loading block next to first.

Load powder in dispensor/scale unit. Dispense first charge and place im primed case.

Move charged case over to press and seat bullet. Place completed round in second loading block.
Repeat until you have finished all your rounds.

The thing I like about this way is I can stretch this operation out over 2-3 days and stop at pretty much any stage of the operation.

How about a primer going off by accident? Had that happen once and it was not something I would care to repeat.

I enjoy a couple beers while I reload, though I never get out of hand, if I hit #3, then I either stop reloading or stop having beers. Never assume anything OR get in a rush, double and triple check everything. If you are unsure of anything, ask here, I have yet to see anyone with a question get flamed in the reloading forum, great guys in here. Good luck and tight groups.
