Reloads are we saving anything ?

You can also save by keeping your eye on the obituaries for old trap shooters who have passed. Some have stock piled lots of components including cheap lead shot.

LOL!! :D How would one identify the deceased as a trap shooter.

The world changes in the subgauges. The last price I saw from Winchester AA 28 gauge was $12.99 per box at Bass Pro. I can load it for less than a third of that price. :)

I was planning to ask a directly relevant question in the "Reloading Forum" but I will take this thread as a cue to ask my question here.

Having done a bit of research during the past week I've formed the opinion that for a novice it maybe a prudent/cost efficient initial step into the world of reloading via acquiring the MEC 600 JR to reload 28ga shells.

Is this a good approach in terms of keeping such activities simple/basic at this time or should I be looking at other (read more advanced) models and/or brands?

It works for the oxycontin junkies. They check obit's and when donations are asked to go to a cancer type fund they find an address then break in looking for a deceased terminal patient's pain killers. When I heard about this I felt like posting a few fake obituaries, you know what I mean.....

Back to the regular program. I can't reload with the crazy price of lead shot for cheaper than the Win and Fed cheap promo stuff. They crush targets just fine for me.

buy the mec 600jr. i got 1 a month ago , loaded almost 500 rds . works great .hulls might be hard to find .AAs are better than remingtons . if you reload 28 guage you will likly shoot it a lot more . i take mine trap shooting . best so far is 19 . oh by the way the mec turns out a factory looking shell . good luck and fun shootin

I load 28 gauge on a MEC 600 Jr with a primer feed. It is simple, easy to understand and probably the best loader for someone who hasn't loaded before. As it is a single-stage it is not as fast as a progressive but with the progressive comes more complexity. Working at an unhurried pace I can easily load 4 boxes of shells and hour.

I also cut to 7/8 and save.

How have you been feeling lately Covey?:p

Also, reloading is great if you like taking out an old side by side with tight chokes, and use spreader inserts to open the pattern,

Good way to optimuize savings. You will save the price of you mec in no time.

I am in this side of the grass and I am burning powder so things are good. :D

No kidding, but I know of a few shooters who have paid their respects to the widow of a shooting buddy and scored a deal on equipment and components, just because the little lady did not know what to do with all the junk that the old guy had stored.

Sometimes the laugh is on the guy scoring the junk in this dubious approach. I know one guy that acquired a ton of reloads that one old fella made. He is forever firing bloopers and misfires. I counted three during one relay one day. Why do I smile every time I see this? :p

Using current component prices I could load 7/8 oz for $4.93. AAs cost $8.50, WST and Top Gun Cost $6.50 when bought by the flat and the absolute best deal I can get on the cheap stuff is $6.20 when buying multiple flats through a club. Since I look at it as cost/bang for practice, I keep at least $1.27/round that I shoot. I save enough so I never feel guilty buying premium when I feel more competative. I throw in my time. Loading is better than watching American Idol.

Now for the reloading supply,
-Powder IMR 800-X, 23$, 27$ with tax
-Shot 25 lb, 49$, 57$ with tax,
-Wad 250, 8,25$, 9.50 with tax
-Primer W209, 1000, 48$, 55$ with tax

You paid too much for components:

Powder is less than $16.00/lb when bought in bulk
Shot can be had for $40.00/bag
Wads are less than $25.00/ thousand
Primer less than $40.00/ thousand

To save money, you have to buy in bulk.

You paid $7.00/lb too much for powder, $9.00/bag too much for shot, $2.00 too much per bag wads, and $8.00/thousand too much for primers.

Just used the on line cost software @trapshooters and my 7/8 oz loads are costing 4.03 per box or 40.30 per flat.
I use this load for everything and do not feel that more lead would improve my shooting.
If I could crazy glue my cheek to the stock all would be well.

I would never use reloads that I did not make.

x3. Buy bulk is the only way. The above are within a buck or two of the prices I pay. I generally use Downrange wads or Claybusters and Clays, Promo or Red Dot.

All fine and good if one has a local source with competitive pricing. Winnipeg with WSP and Cabelas Canada not stocking shot, wads, powder in larger than 1 lb cans, having components especially powder shipped is ridiculously expensive.
And they ain't selling top guns or any other target shells for less than $65. Plus taxes per flat.

As far as components go. find out where the shooters are. The ones who shoot trap, skeet or sporting clays. They will help you find a source for components and rescue you from the hell you seem to be in. If you want to load cheap you need to buy powder by the 8 lb cannister, wads and primers by the 5000. Buy the cheaper powders like promo. Buy primers like cheddite instead of winchester, federal, or remington. Buy knock off wads like Claybuster instead of the brand names. Buy shot wherever you can get it.
