Reloder 25... Magic in my 25-06

I have beauty mid 70's Finnbear in 25-06 and I had tried many powder and bullet combinations to get a nice tight group. I had settled on a fairly light load of 4350 and did manage to get a nice antelope at 300 plus yards,
Then a fella named bent barrel suggested I try reloder 25. So i did with 120gr hornady bullets and 56, 57,and 58 gr of powder and wouldn't you know it 58 gr put 3 into 1/2 a thumbnail at 100 yards. Wow my Sako now is the great shooter I hoped it would become. I chronied this load with the Magnetospeed at an average of 3162 feet per second. My high was 3184 and low was 3146. Sd was 19 and ES was 28.
I had some of the old load with me and they were hi, 2883, low 2860 av 2874, SD 12 and ES 23. Scores nice but will not group inside an inch

The cow elks in Suffield are in trouble now...LOL FS

I'm having some issues with my 25-06 namely that it will not shoot anything heavier than a 100 gr. bullet.
A 117 gr. Hornady will keyhole within 25 yds. of the muzzle, what to do ?.... stick with lighter bullets I guess..
 
Yeah, I think the norm is the 1:10 twist.... the old weatherby's in 257 used to have a 1:12 i think. They had a 117 roundnose loading for these. Kind of a weird combo, but it apparently worked. Maybe try some round noses in the 25-06?
 
Its a custom build of sorts..... a 98 Mauser done up at Al Petersen's Rifle Ranch shop @ Riverhurst SK. back in the late '70s.
I try to collect as many of his ' creations ' as I can afford because they are unique in my opinion.
I knew him as we farmed an hour North of his shop / farm, he was noted for making his barrels out of truck axles and also he rifled them with a left-hand twist. They also did their own stock-work which was really nothing fancy, but very comfortable and serviceable.
One of their builds which I bought about 1974 or thereabouts is the absolute most accurate shooting 375 H&H I have ever had.
They made all their own reamers and everything and unless I'm mistaken this 25-06 was probably built for use as a Coyote rifle using a light bullet.
I'm just now learning the ins and outs of posting pictures on here so maybe later I'll try posting one of it.

Kevan, how does it shoot 100gr bullets? Sieera has a 90gr and of course the newer Barnes TTSX in 80gr
 
I use imr4831. 52 gr under a 117 gr btsp. Usually groups great. Today I left my ammo in my truck all day in the heat. Didn't group near as well. Primers were a little flatter then usual.
It's sighted in for colder less humid weather

Nice to see some love for the 25/06. I made a note about reloader 25 for future consideration.

I'm shooting a Kimber Sonora, still working on the Hornady 117 gr btsp, but found a promising node low in the powder range with 4831sc. I finished working on the Hornady 75 gr hp with 61.1 gr of 4831sc and have it shooting consistently under moa out to 360 yds (that's all I can get out of my range). I haven't chrony'd it, but the book says its around 3,500 fps. Seems like a nice flat load for coyotes.

According Mr. bent barrel the Reloder 25 in 25-06 is just mostly effective with the heavier bullets as in 115gr and 120 gr.
Now I have loaded a buddies rifle with Reloader 22 with the 115gr Barnes TSX and got superb results.. FS
 
I have had very good luck with retumbo and the 115 bergers. I'm shooting 58.8 grains, federal 210M primers, norma brass, and getting 3200ish with 1/4"-1/2" groups. I wanted to give the RL stuff a try but its been very hard to find.
