I'm just wondering if anyone has some experience in dealing with the shell deflector "nub" on the barrel extension of the 1100 classic trap barrel. I have been shooting the gun for the past two years on the trap field and it functions flawlessly on singles; but as soon as I try to shoot a round of doubles, I find that the action will occasionally lock open after ejecting the first spent shell.

I know that the "nub" is designed to eject the shells straight down instead of hitting your neighbour to your right on the line, and it does just that. But I usually use a T&S shell catcher because I normally reload, so it is really not necessary.

I think (and this is a very uneducated opinion) that this nub is what's causing my action to lock open when shooting doubles, because the outgoing shell will bounce around for a split second in the ejection port before shooting down. Sometimes it even stays sitting in the port, brass end in, almost as if a shell catcher was being used. Also, this is not an issue of the loads being too light and not fully cycling the action. The action cycles back no problem, it just locks open sometimes and will not cycle up the next shell.

Removing the nub would not be a very difficult job, I just wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts. I'd hate to modify the barrel for nothing. Plus I'd really like to be able to shoot doubles here and there. And yes, I know if I want to shoot doubles I should get an O/U ;) I will eventually, just not in the cards at this time.

Thanks very much!!

I had a similar problem with this. I never ended up removing the nub all together, but rather just grinding and shaping it (chamfering it a bit on the inside-facing edge) with a file so that it was a little shorter and less likely to fully snag shells on the way out. It didn't really take alot of material off to clean it up and it still knocks shells straight down. If you go to far, it's not to hard to replace -- not that you seem to want it anyway... IIRC there are some articles on Shotgunworld that describe the same problem.

Hi again, so I ended up shooting Remington Customer Service an email asking them the same question and they came back with this;

"Your thinking on the cause is correct. The nub will sometimes catch a shell or the bolt and lock the action open. Removing it will require some slight machining. It can be done by a qualified gunsmith that is familiar with the process. Since trap was originally thought of as a singles event, the nub was added without a thought of doubles being part of the game."

So I used a mini file and took the nub right down and took it to the range today. Test fired it and shot three rounds of doubles, not one issue.

So hopefully that's the end of that!!

Thanks for your response!
