I notice on the 1100 I recently acquired that it has some play in the barrel.Even with the fore stock /mag tube nut tight I can still twist the barrel a fraction of an inch.Removing the barrel I see it has a groove on the outer left side that looks like it should slide into a tab in the receiver,Inside the reciever it looks like there should be some sort of guide that sits in the groove of the barrel but is worn down.Should there be a guide?if so can this be repaired?Or is the sloppiness normal for an old 1100?

Thanks Fred

How much movement are you talking?? There is some play in all but not excessive
Have you checked the shoulder inside the receiver and the end of the barrel extension to make sure they are flat and mated together What about the alignment pin is it worn, damaged or even there. How is the pin slot on the backside of the barrel extension is it worn
Do you have any pics of these areas
Cheers
Not my pic but this should help

I don't have any pics. The alignment pin? This must be what looks to be worn on the inner left side of the receiver? Is it repairable or is the reciever scrap? There is approx. 1/8" of play.

OK looking at the pic you posted,my alignment pin looks to be worn.

I guess it depends on how old the 1100 is, if it's looks matters to you and if you are comfortable trying a repair
1/8" is a lot but I would bet the farm if you e-mailed remington they would say the pin is only there for initial barrel alignment and once it is tightened down it is fine me I never liked a gun with that much play and fixed it
I did one where I kind of created a pin with a mig and the other I drilled out the remaining pin, tapped the receiver and made a stud to screw in
Both ended up with a real ugly side of a receiver that should have been refinished and reblued
Both repairs although they worked were a PIA so after that I just replaced the receivers which is not hard to find for an old 1100 12ga
As far as a smith doing one they never did years ago but god knows what they would do today. Even remington back in the day would just replace the receiver if it was sent back for repair
Sorry I could not be of more help
Cheers

Thanks 3m.I have been doing some digging on the interwebs and I'm wondering about the fore end support assembly.I did not check it,but understand that the older two piece supports(I'm assuming my late 70's version is) could break causing sloppiness. The gun is stored elsewhere so it will be a few days before I can get a look at it.If as you say the alignment pin is not really necessary then maybe its the support that needs attention?

I cannot see that being your problem unless I misunderstood you. Most broke and a lot of people just removed what was left and used the gun without a fore end support. I am not saying the alignment pin is not necessary it is IMO but remington if you ask will probaly say the gun will function fine without it or at least they used to say that
Would not hurt to ask since it has been many years since I did
Cheers

I was able to get a closer look at it tonight. The alignment pin is definitely wore down to nothing.Surprising since the gun has had little use.As for the fore end support ,it's the old style and looks in tact, though not sure what they actually should look like.I can only find pics of the new style replacement. The actual play is more like 1/16", but feels like more. While I don't like it I guess the sloppinesss is something I'm going to have to tolerate. At some point I might drill and tap the receiver for a set screw as a guide pin.

1/16 is not much. If it is bothering you try to make a small shim and install it in the groove on the back of the barrel that will help with the play if there is some stud there at all. I have seen guys epoxy them also but then you cannot take the barrel off
All the best
