I have a Rem 1100 12ga magnum that is having some trouble. It cycles just fine with 3" shells but for some reason it is not "cocked" after chambering the shell. When I #### it manually all is fine. Anyone heard of this before ? Any ideas ? I am not much of a "do it yourselfer" so I may just take it to my gunsmith.

Make sure the gun is clean.

If you are using the cheap 2 3/4" loads there won't be enough velocity to throw the bolt back all the way.

Try using a magnum load.

I assume you have cleaned the mag tube of all residue and checked your o-ring for damage. The o-ring should last for a very long time, but they can get cut when removing for cleaning.

From what I understand, and I stand to be corrected... Some 1100's do work OK with both 3" and 2 3/4" shells, but many 1100's with a 3" chamber will not operate with 2 3/4" shells. If you replace the barrel with the 2 3/4" chambered target barrel (which has larger gas ports), it should work fine whereas the magnum barrel does not.

The 11-87 has the compensated gas system and thus handles both shell sizes fine.

Yes, gas port is clean and o-ring is fine. I was using 3" shells (Turkey) loads and the problem exists. When I switch to a barrel with a 2 3/4" chamber and use heavy 2 3/4 loads the same thing occurs.. the round ejects and the next one chambers, but the hammer is not locked back. To mean this means an action problem and not a barrel/gas port problem.

I am going to take apart the action and de-grease it good and see if that helps.
