Was at the range today and a freinds 597 blew up . mag destroid & stock cracked . asume round went off before bolt closed . Anyone else have this problem . Who will do Rem warranty . Local deler is warrenty depo for Rem but wont touch the 597 . Guess my friend now has a expensive pile of wood & metal

seems to happen to the 17HMR semis , you never seem to see this problem with the 22lr-22mag semis. IMHO I think it is the shape of the case that is the culprit ......................

iirc Russells had some issues with this model when it first came out and was taking them back if the customer had issues
(that was a couple of years ago though)

Well here is a update on my freinds Rem 597 17HMR . he sent to Rem warranty depot in Vancouver . He was advised that Rem was no longer repairing the 597 in 17 HMR but good news is they are sending him a brand new 597 in 22 Magnum . Better than a broken 17HMR I guess

It's a good rifle...

...I've never had a feeding or ejection problem with mine and it consistantly shoots tight groups.

did the 10/17 ever even make it out of the catalog or was it stillborn like the infamous 308 XGI?
i think the problem was/is with the ammo not being semi-auto friendly
i have a 597/17 and it has been way, way more user friendly than my FiLs 10/22 Magnum (which i think is now discontinued as well....

Your buddy should count his blessings her didn't get hurt and he now has a better rifle. I shoot a 597 22mag and it never jams (+30c to -30c) its very accurate and seems to kill better than a 17hmr especialy at longer ranges. He will like this one better any way.

Sounds to me that the .17 HMR cartridge is trouble if two major manufacturers are not dealing with them anymore. Nice to see Remington looked after their customer. I really think this to be an ammo problem and not a rifle issue, so he's lucky Remington stepped up to the bat.
