I know that WSS was taking them back as well! I thought it was common knowledge and everyone knew that .17 HMR and 597 did not mix.
 
I know of 5 returns prior to reading this thread. Same thing! Blown up actions and mags! I know that Remington replaced the guns, but I will never understand whythey did not do a total recall of the product?

I can think of a reason why they would not want to cover it.

If Remington honors its warranty when a given incident occurs, it may be viewed as an admission that there is something wrong with design or manufacture. It might not seem like a big deal, if the only downside is the replacement of a defective firearm. Some would say that Remington should repair or replace a firearm in all cases, if only for the purpose of good public relations. This kind of service can build customer loyalty.

But there is a big downside, if some poor guy ends up with a bolt lodged in his forehead. In that case, some ambulance-chasing lawyer might look at all the instances where guns were repaired or replaced under warranty, and say the firearm is inherently unsafe. The safer course maybe to say “screw off” to everyone who brings their guns back, and say that every incident was due solely to "operator error."

Big companies do this all the time.

Ok, Remington sends him a new gun. (Kudos to Remington.) How does this work with the registration? Does he have to contact CFC to tell them the story? His .17 serial # now has to be taken off the books due to its destruction, and he now has to register the .22 mag? Or does Remington look after it?

The rifle will simply be de-registered. I blew up an Enfield once. I took it to the copshop, said get it off my file, and it was a done deal.
 
rem will send it to a dealer who in turn transfers it to your buddy

who cares about deregistering it get a recipt that it was turned into rem or the dealer and leave well enough alone it will be ANOTHER ghost gun in the system as long as a paper trail shows it was turned in your buddy is covered....
 
They are still selling the rem 597 though, I just got a flyer in the mail with them on sale. Strange that they weren't recalled if they know about this and aren't even going to fix them.

The 597 is still being sold in the .22 LR and .22 Mag. If Remington has discontinued the .17 HMR, the remaining hmr's might be pumped out at clearance prices.

They will probably sell the patent to Norinco:p
 
that is one of the problems the gas pressure is much higher if you used a centerfire styled gas system you'd likly fire with out incident
 
My 597 22lr just did the samething, yestarday after about 50 rounds...blew the ejector right off...and now can be fire regardless of the position of the bolt
