Rem 597... any good

It's nice to see for the most part, that all the Ruger 10/22 lovers didn't jump all over this thread with jabs, insults and low blows.
Then again...we don't have to.
Previous 597 owners do it for us. :xes

buy one i love mine for the price it will blow a 10/22 out of the water. first thing you need to do is buy the volquartsen parts (guess what its still cheaper than a 10/22 even with fancy parts), when you buy the big mag sand it down till it drops free, loosen guide rods,free float the barrell. and dont forget to check the 597 forum on rimfire central. i have also installed a boyds evolution stock as well.

i have had zero issues since the volquartsen parts showed up.
 
I picked up the ACC-SD version. (IIRC 16.5" 1/2-28 threaded bbl)
It shot great out of the box. Ate cheap Win555's with no extraction issues but the trigger was heavy.
I free-floated the bbl and installed a VQ hammer. The hammer made a huge diff in trigger weight (from 8lbs to ~4lbs) I also installed a VQ extractor even though it didn't need one.
 
I recently bought the VTR despite hearing all complaints about FTE, FTF etc. Eventually found out that it was easily remedied with a couple easily performed mods.
Guess what, mine has been flawless without the necessary work others have had to do.
The gun has a nice substantial weight to it. My son has since added a bipod, and a scope with laser. Sweet set up and will cycle any and all brands. Wish I could say the same about my Marlin...
 
I love my 597. Granted, I'm fairly new to guns, but it seems very, very accurate at 50 yards, will cycle any type of cartridge from the standard 10 shot clip (have used cci stingers, win super-x, federal bulk pack, and even the much hated thunderbolts.). All cycled well, with slightly varying degrees of accuracy. I bought a 30 round clip for it, which I don't care for. It realistically only can accept 18 or so cartridges, and is sticky in the receiver.

If I had it to do over, I would have selected it again.
 
I have had mine for over 2 years and I love it. Mine is the base model synthetic/blued. I like the sights, like its accuracy and, despite many others opinions, have very rarely had jamming or feeding issues. I use Winchester 555 and it works great in it. Considering I got it new for 180 bucks, I am very happy with mine. My buddy has a stainless one and he is equally as happy with his

Same thing happened to me only the Ruger 10-22 was the one that failed miserably.Remington is flawless, do not waste your money on the 10-22.
 
Bring a small flashlight with you when you buy it. Shine it in the ejection port and look in the muzzle. Buy one with the cleanest looking bore. I didn't do that and got a rusty one. I fixed it with a bit of brasso on a jag/patch, 10 strokes followed by a good cleaning.
Also look for burrs on the crown and misalignment of the sights.
If you can get a gun without all those things you'll have a great gun!
 
Never had a problem with my old grey one, it was my first gun, and realized it hates any type remi ammo. Put about 25 000 rnds through it in 8 yrs. Great gun, sold it to upgrade to a VTR model. No problems with the VTR yet other then it is s b!tch to clean.
 
Update: Finally got around to bringing my new 597 out to the range. Almost 500 rounds, no FTF, FTE issues with CCI blazer 40 grain ammunition. With a cheap aimpoint red-dot the rifle was quite accurate out at 25 yards. Got to use both the factor 10-round and Remington 30-round banana magazine, neither had any issue. Only thing I didn't like about the 30-round mag was that it doesn't activate the bolt hold-open after the last shot, which lead to me dry firing the gun a few times.

I was surprised how well it functioned even with cheap bulk ammunition, even when I got bored and started dumping rounds down range quickly, never a hiccup. So far very impressed!
 
I had one of the basic ones. Personally I really didn't care too much for it. For a cheap 22 I figured "why not" but regret not buying the Ruger. The only reason I chose the Remington was because the reviews I read said the heavier barreled Remington was more accurate. At the range or just plinking I found it constantly shot high and to the left. The factory irons didn't do much to help either. Plinking isn't very fun when you can't zero your gun. It was also pretty hard to clean as you can't take the bolt out unless you are doing a full-on disassembly. In the end I traded it.

I bought a Savage Mark II that will shoot 1/4 " groups at 50 meters on good days.

Admittedly this is my first rimfire, and I also had a similar issue with the gun shooting high and left, but adjusting the aimpoint was easy enough, I can't comment on the factory irons though. For the value for money, I still think it's a great buy, especially with the $25 factory rebate, (not to mention the shop I bought mine from threw in a brick of CCI' blazer). I originally wanted to get a tacti-cool mossberg 22, but just could not get past how cheap it felt. The 597 (although not as cool looking) seemed to fit the bill quite nicely.

On my way out of the range, I decided to handle the 597VTR, which felt every bit as nice as the ISSC scar. Only thing holding me back is trying to save funds for a CZ858 :ar15:
