Rem 597 charging handle falls out

It's too late for warranty....

So the charging handle is limpishly held by that spring on the bolt body. The charging handle just falls out when you turn the gun on its side - or completely ejects when firing.

Does the rivet that holds the charging handle retainer spring sit flush or snug in the bolt body? The rivet on mine is sloppy. Any known fix besides a new spring from Remington?

Besides this problem the rifle is great.
 
I had the same problem with an early one that I bought second hand. The spring fits down into that little recess on the bolt handle. I filed a deeper groove straight across where the bend of the spring sits against the bolt handle and bent the spring slightly. No more problems.

I'll have a look and maybe try that.

I also found someone posting they used JB weld to 'blob' it into place (for lack of a better term...or building it up into place....haha), and supposedly the bolt/carrier assembly with attached charging handle still comes out of the reciever by tilting it.
 
I picked one up on Aug 5th, out to the range once and the same thing happened. The charging handle and the spring flew out. Luckily there were both sitting on the shooting bench. Had a bunch of jams before that happened. I'm taking mine back to the store this weekend, not sure if I want to get another rem.
 
I just bought a used 597 a couple weeks ago and I thought that was the weirdest thing, having the little finger handle just pull out like that? It seems to stay in fine tho, probably 500 rds through with no problems. I assume they do that for disassembly, so you can drop the bolt out the bottom?

Yes, pull the handle out to dissassemble. Meh, not the best design with that little spring. Besides this flaw I like the rifle so I'd like to keep it.
 
I had a 597 that would ftf every second shot. When I took it back in to Cabela's in Saskatoon they just refunded my money. One of the guys at the counter showed me and the out-law that you can just pull those handles out without hardly any effort. Supposedly for tear down purposes he told us. Savage Mark 2's and Ruger's for me after that.

Left mine with wholesale on the 12th, they have now said I will probably have to send back to Remington myself. Used the darn thing once. Ugh.
 
That sucks. I've picked up 4 22's in the last 3 months. 5 if you count the Remi that went back. That's just poor customer service on Wholesales part I think. How long did you have it before you got to shoot it?
 
Well I got another handle retainer spring and rivet ($12) on it's way. I'll try that first. The handle on my 597 was very loose from day one so probably a defective setup.
 
I put in the new spring and rivet today. Still very loose. Actually not much different than it was before. Nearly zero force required to pull the charging handle out. I'll work on tweaking the spring when I take it apart later. For now I'll paint the charging handle red so when it falls out it will be easy to find.:(
