Rem 597, Help me decide

I need to know a lot about a rem 597, Good Points, Bad points, Whats better?
I have a chance to trade a SKS for a synthetic rem597., no heavy barrel, nothing extra, used. Should I take it or wait for something better?

Id say wait for something better.

Depending on the condition of your SKS, and if numbers are matching, etc you can get $160-220 for it. You can buy a new 597 with the money and still have a little bit left over for accessories if you shop around. Or find a used one on the EE (sometimes they pop up as low as $130, so save on taxes).

As for the rifle itself, 597s are known for extraction issues. If you can upgrade to a VQ extractor it is a cheap and easy fix... but tracking one of the extractors down right now is a bit hard! Although some people get 597s that are mint and never have those issues, it is a common problem. Not as many aftermarket parts available as the ruger; but there is at least a something.

If you just want a basic synthetic shooter I HIGHLY recommend the Marlin 795s or 60s. AMAZING .22s for a great price!

I have the AAC-SD model. It's accurate, fun to shoot. I don't have the extraction issues other seem to have. Perhaps I got the special version? I do like the close to full size stock. It just fits me better. I had both the Marlin 795 and the remington side by side. I just liked the 597 better. But I'll admit it took me a long time to choose between the two.
 
I love my 597.

Good points:
-Full sized rifle
-Double guide rods + heavy bolt make for silky cycling
-accurate for a semi
-10rd magazine fits flush on the bottom. If you're a hi-cap appreciator, they are available too

Bad points:
-if not set right, the double guide rods can bind the bolt

Fine, fun, affordable .22's.
 
I bought a new 597 about a year ago and HATED it, cleaned it, coddled it, carefully set the guide rods, lots of issues. FTE mainly, but also FTL, last round hold open. So After trying unsuccessfully to sell it, started NOT cleaning it or anything, just shot it. Now it seems fine, its a fun gun. I had several hundred rounds through it at least before it started behaving. Last round hold open still doesn't work, but I think the little spring has sprang. This is a shame, cause the mag doesn't lock in with authority with the bolt closed. Its now a regularly used rifle. I also have a 30 round banana clip, and it seems to work fine, although others have reported issues. Mine was well under $300 scoped and delivered, with extra 30 rd mag. There is a dedicated 597 forum with tons of tricks and advice.

I just ordered a 597 AAC-SD with a 16.5" barrel for gits and shiggles for 268$ to my door.

I know of all issues associated with them and reports state that the ones made in 2012 forth have all major issues solved.

Some mags are still junk though with the black Remington brand 30 rounders and factory 10 round metal mags being the most reliable.

I will however, be ordering the Volquartsen extractor and hammer when they become available.

I will wait in ordering a MCARBO hammer spring kit since the Volquatsen hammer may be enough for my needs.

I'm still debating a scope or red dot but leaning towards Nikon Prostaff Target EFR for a scope.

I have 597 VTR with over 10,000 rounds through it. I have had no non ammo related issues with it. After over 5,000 rounds I managed to locate VQ parts and replaced both the hammer and extractor. The hammer improves the trigger pull. I have followed rimfire centrals tips for the 597 to keep it ticking.
 
I have a 597. The same synthetic one you are talking about. I love it now. BUT I had a lot of headaches with it to begin with. Once I set the guide rods properly I took it to the range. It worked well for a couple mags. Then the nightmare began with the trigger. I'll shorten it up and tell you it ended with me sending the trigger in for warranty work a SECOND time. When I talked the gunsmith I asked him straight up if they were a piece of crap and if I should just buy something else. He said the design of the trigger group SUCKS. There is a very small o ring designed to keep everything in line. It is very common for it fail. You also can't fix the o ring. You need to replace the trigger group. The good news is that if it's going to break it does it in the first 100 rounds or so.
Now that mine is working well, I LOVE it. Fits nice, cycles smooth. Pretty damn accurate too.
 
I have two. The oldest one is a 2004 lss model with iron sights. Has just over 20, 000 rounds through it. Has the mcarbo kit, volquartsen hammer and a stock extractor. Runs perfect. My newest one is a aac-sd. Has a volquartsen hammer, volquartsen extractor and mcarbo kit. Only have 400 or so rounds through it but is shoots very well. It sits in a boyds tacticool stock (bought before they could not export them) and has a linear comp on it. I quite enjoy these rifles, they don't shoot as well as a cz 452 but more than well enough for gophers and tin cans. The aac sd model with mini mags and a vortex diamondback 2-7x32 rimfire scope will put ten rounds into an inch at 50 yards.

Do you find the trigger would be too light with the Volquartsen hammer combined with the MACARBO spring for hunting purposes?
 
I was initially worried about it but it turned out to be a non issue. Trigger pull is around 2.5lb on the LSS to 3lb on the lower mileage AAC-sd. Under two pounds I would be a little leery for gophers.

Did you try the smaking the butt against the floor test after install as well?

I too have the AAC-SD and I'm curious to know if low rings would work with a scope that has a 40mm objective?
