I recently bought a 597 and I love it so far. But I've seen that you can change the hammer and extractor from Volquartsen to make it even better. Is there a gun shop or dealer that has these?

One thing that I don't get is there is no sling mounts for it. I have a plastic stock on and I dont see any holes to screw the mounts in it. Anybody have recommendations for the sling mounts?

Thanks Thk

For Sling studs. Drill and screw them in. Might have to reinforce the inside with some epoxy if there is not enough material to thread into well. I had a 597 for less than 24 hours. Nice looking but was a whole lot of trouble. Must have gotten a Monday morning or Friday afternoon one.

There is a spot On the front of the stock meant to be drilled for a sling stud. I drilled mine and used a stud made for a wood stock with a coarse thread. Look at your stock you'll see what I mean.

As for the vq hammer and extractor you'll reall like them. Cleans the trigger right up. Keep your guide rails loose and that thing will run like a sewing machine. Mine did.

This is one of the most important things about the 597. Screw the guide rods screws in to a VERY LIGHT finger tight position, then back off 1/4 turn of the wrench. Too much pressure will bow the guide rods and cause FTE and FTF malfunctions. Install a Volquartsen hammer, and you can easily cut the trigger pull pressure in half. I am still using the Remington extractor, but have a VQ one on hand in case anything happens.

BTW my 597 is an older one with first generation plastic magazines. I shoot up to 2000 or so Gophers a year with it, and have had no real problems using Champion bulk HP ammo. Like the Timex watch or the Duracell rabbit, it just keeps on ticking and working as it should.

Thanks for the info.

But it doesnt say what/who manufactures the extractor. Because the extractor from Brownells doesnt look like the one from Volquartsen. Maye the just rebranded it?

For sling swivels use uncle mikes with machine screw front, theres a few youtube videos.

Brownells makes their own extractor that is in between the stock one and volq as the steel isnt as hard as the volq.

Id buy that target hammer asap thats the first time i ever seen it in stock.

I got a reply last night from John at MilArm and the hammer and extractor are backorder.

On a side note John was really fast on replying. Really impressed!
