Just got back from the range with my buddy, we both own identical 597s. We each went through a brick of American Eagle copper Hps, on his last magazine his rifle slam fired itself empty(9 discharges). To say the least we were very shocked, given that until this point we have had no major problems with either rifle. Was just wondering if anyone out there more knowledgeable than myself could shed some light on possible causes and solutions.

Thanks

Wow, never heard of that. Glad it didn't hurt anyone. I'd give it a good break down and clean. If no one here chimes in lots of good info on rimfirecentral in the 597 forum.

I suspect on break down you'll see either lots of crud, or something broken.

So during a complete breakdown and cleaning we discovered that there is small hole blown through the bottom of the bolt! Could this have been the cause of or result of the slam fire incident? Before it is asked, he is positive the damaged bolt was not damaged prior to this range trip.

Should post up a pic of that.

That hole in the bottom of the bolt is normal. I'm pretty sure every single 597 owner is alarmed to find that there the first time they disassemble the gun.

As for the slamfire, maybe accumulated crud in the firing pin channel?

I have a brand new, unfired 597 and the hole in the bolt is present.

I think this has more to do with the trigger group (specifically the disconnector) than anything to do with the bolt.

If I'm understanding the OP correctly, the 597 slam-fired 9 rounds (basically went full-auto) when he fired the first round in the magazine. I'm assuming the firer let go of the trigger after the first round?

Either way, discontinue use of the firearm and contact either the dealer you bought it from or Remington Canada.

did he try it again ? , how clean was the rifle befor you started shooting? could be a stuck fireing pin. If the pin was stuck it would not matter if you took your finger off the trigger as the firing pin would strike the next chambered case as the bolt closed . Kinda like the open bolt Fullautos

We had no more ammunition that was the last 10 rounds from the brick. As far as I know he had broken it down and cleaned it after our last outing. Also, the trigger was released after the first round, was very surprising when it mag dumped itself.

1st. AWWWEEEESOME!
2nd. Good job with the safe muzzle control. That could have been an ugly situation!
2rd. How much you want for that prohib? lol

Sounds like the sping came loose from the trigger bar or the trigger lip got full of crap causing it to slip instead of catching on the hammer.
You never modified the trigger housing right?
If you post some pic's I can walk you threw fixing it or better yet if you live in the LMZ I'll show you how to fix it in a couple of seconds. That is if you didn't modify it. Then it my take a little longer. ;)
