Rem 597 vs. Savege 93R17 FV

New to the .17 caliber, and want to get a good precision rifle. Looking at two models, but being cheap, as I am I want to understand what are you paying for with Remington.
IF this was not discussed before - Remington 597 is a lot more expensive then Savage 93R17 FV. What do you get for more money with Rem? Does it worth it?
I understand that it is semi-auto vs bolt. Anything else?

I've had both. I had an earlier 597 that had the problem with the cheap mags. They would constantly jam, fail to feed etc etc. That being said, the new mags apparently solved a lot of the grief. They are pretty accurate, but nowhere like my Savage 93R17BVSS. It is an extremely accurate rifle and the accutrigger is fantastic. The only drawback to the Savage is that there is a rail you have to ride the mag onto in order to insert properly. It is not as easy to operate as I would like. I find myself having to take my eye off the scope when reloading to see what I am doing. Not too bad when at the range, but a bit of a pain when gopher shooting etc. I still prefer the Savage though for the money saved, and it is that much more you can put into optics. My 2 cents worth.
 
I disagree. I have a 597 LS/HB that shoots circles around every other gun at the range. Mind you, it has had a bedding/freefloat/trigger job....but still. Also, I LIKE having instant follow-up shots (7 of them in fact).
Before someone point it out, yes tmy .17 is on the EE....but ONLY because I have a new .204 that is my current love :)

WW - I understand that Remington is very acurate rifle and that is why it is on my short list. I tried it on a range ones (gotta love shooting public - some very nice gentleman let my son and myself to try it) and was so impressed that now I want something in this caliber too. But it cost $220 + tax more then Savage though. If Savage is comparable in accuracy, then it gotta be something they charge for. I am trying to find out what is it and talk myself into buying Remington. So far looks like the extra money are going into the brand name and I hate to pay for that..(I am cheap as mentioned :) ).

I will take a closer look at other models mentioned.

Good god man, why?!?! Save some money and put it into a decent scope!

You very rarely hear a bad thing about Savage .17s...other than occassional complaints about the fit and finish. The same can't be said for the 597.

Personally, I'd rather pay for accuracy than fit and finish....and going by Savages prices, the accuracy is cheaper!!!

I had the Remington LS HB version for about two weeks. Shot every available load through it (that was only about three choices at that time) and was so pissed off with the terrible trigger and lousy accuracy that I traded it back in.

That was my second (and LAST) model 597.

Well you are also comparing apples to orenges by comparing a bolt action to a semi auto . The savage is a great gun and for a 17hmr I would only buy a bolt action ( I had the savage in both 22mag and 17hmr and loved them ) as for a semi in 17hmr ,I would say nope .
hop over to rimfire centrail and have a read on the 597's in 17hmr and you will read on quite a few blow ups ,but they do cycle reliable untill they pop;)

Now I have have built 17 ruger 10/22's ,2 10/22magnums and one 10/22--> 22mag useing the setback method. I would buy one do it all up, shoot it, sell it and do it all over again . I finaly quit building them because I was afraid to get a scratch in them . I loved my 10/22mags ......loved it, But same thing dident want to wreck it . So last year I sold the last of my done up 10/22's .........one in 22LR for $1050 and the 22mag for a $1100 .
Called up wholesale that day bought a plain Jane 10/22 (and it has remaind that way except for hammer/extractor etc..) and also a 597 in 22mag HB laminate and I must say it has not Jammed once in over 500+ rounds and I have used damm near every type of ammo in it (plastic mag to boot) it is extremly accurate and for the price you cant beat it . I saw the same gun but in 22lr in the EE forum and picked it up as well , and it shoots great .
My buddy had a 597 and it functioned like crap and I said I would never never ever buy one of them in 22lr ,But after I bought the mag it changed my mind and I gave it a try. Mabey I am a lucky one? but I hate to say it I like them ,Not as much as a 10/22 ,but I like them .
as for the 597 in 17hmr ............... not a chance ,stick with the bolt and the savage is a great gun
