I will be purchasing a used Remington 597 VTR and was told the rifle has occasional hangups with cheap bulk 22lr ammo. Upon reading about the rifle i have found that alot of people swap out/upgrade the extractor (for the extraction issues), hammer and bushings (just because). I shall give it a thorough clean of course but just curious where do most guys/gals with the 597 purchase their upgrade kits from as i have only found 1 source and am more of a 10/22 guy. Any help is as always, much appreciated!

I just bought a regular 597 with the iron sights. Only had 1 hang-up in the 112 shots I put through it. As of a few days ago there were some members who put the upgraded extractors on the EE. I don't have them and I'm not worried about the 1 in 100 bad ones, mind you I was using the cheapest ammo money could buy

Bought mine used from the EE. Got a few FTF where the round was simply smashed against the top of the receiver but i suspect it was magazine issue. Keep your mag clean and it should work like it should.

Get the Mcarbo upgrade for the trigger. They ship to Canada. That was 2 years ago.
I bought the Volquartsen hammer and extractor from Sylvester Sports. That was more than 10 years ago, though.

MCarbo does not recommend using the spring and bushing kit in conjunction with a target hammer but I have with no issues.
The target hammer from Volquartsen is more of a change in trigger pull than the spring kit in my experience.
There is a lot of advice and experience on modifications at rimfirecentral.

just do the hammer and extractor Volquartsen all the way then your rifle will feed anything you give it the rem extended mags suck and the hold open does not work. But will rip through the mag 0 issues

I picked up a Volquartsen hammer and extractor for my newer 597 after reading about some problems guys were having with their rifles. That said, to this point in time after firing about 1200 rounds through it, the rifle has worked perfectly without adding the parts.
