I have Rem 660 I acquired and was debating whether this would/could be a serious range gun...is the 660 action suitable for building a long range shooter? The gun is in great shape...I already have another for hunting use...any ideas?:sniper:

Really limited production (only 50 000 made over a 3 year period) so you may want to hold on to it, and or sell/trade it rather than build something off of it. It may be hard to find parts for.

I still miss my model 660, one of my first centerfires, sold after owning it for roughly 30 years...what was I thinking?

Didn't Remington bring back that action for a brief period, just a couple of years back? It was a target/varmint style gun with a laminate stock. I can't recall the name, but they referred to the action as being from the XP singleshot handgun, which was the same action as the 600-series. In any case, I'm sure you could build it into a cool little gun. Mine was always very accurate. You may have to do some searching to find the bits and pieces you need for it. Wouldn't it be easier just to use a model 7 action instead?

I already have the gun...why buy another? (I know that was a stupid question:D) It would be different than other guns out there...I just wasn't sure if it was an action that was proper for the job at hand...I was thinking a 20 inch barrel in 308...It's nice to collect guns...however I want to shoot not collect...after I kick off, someone else can "collect" my guns...:p

you hit the nail on the head squibloads, the 660 in .308 is my dream build, not much different than a 700 rem realy, just the cool dog leg bolt, a 600 in .223 was one of my favourites in my youth in B.C. killed many bears, deer and my first moose with it, fit a premium medium heavy barrel and you will never look back imho. short as a win 94 30-30 but with real .308 power, a jeff cooper scout rifle with out the crappy forward mounted scope.

I have a few of these in various calibers, they are a good rifle. You can true and sleeve the action, rebarrel and restock, bed etc. The only drawback is that by the time you are done, you'll have more money into it then a low end custom action. - dan

But...how many other people you know have a custom 660 out there...(that's my thinking). By the feedback it sounds like it would be a good build...I won't restock as I want to keep it looking as close as I can to a stock 660...

My main concern was if the 660 was worthwhile sinking money into...

Me. And I've seen at least a dozen others over the years (including a very nicely done Mannlicher stocked 7mm-08 back in the late seventies, which I lusted after but didn't have the money for). They are a good, basic, Remington action. You won't have the accessories available that a 700 will, but if you except that going in, have fun. - dan

Good Grief...I think I saw one at a gun show awhile back....but now...? I'm glad that they are a "promising" build (660)...Ya it's that damn money issue that wrecks all our fun:D Plus I've sold way too many nice and unique guns over the years that I'm still kicking myself for...!
