Picked up a nice, as new, Remington 700 SPS .30-06 a couple weeks back [thanks 'hunterhenderson' ;) ]... now thinking of scoping it. Already has Leupold dual-dovetail mounts installed.

Going to use what scope I have 'spare' on hand. Here's the choices... matte Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm or matte Leupold fixed 6 power x 42mm.

What would you scope this rifle with & why...

I'd use the 3-9X....if you hunt like I do,...in the bush and then out in the open alternately, the 3X is better in the bush than 6X and out in the open if game is spotted you can go to 9X to check it out....I know the 6X Leo is popular, I just can't understand why. I'd rather have a straight 4X myself, I think the low end of magnification is more important than the upper. ALL of my hunting rifles wear either 3-9X Leos or 2.5-8X Leos. I just can't see even stepping off a cutline into the bush with a 6X scope...works for some I guess, but I won't do it.

I just like the 3-9's,and I really like the leupolds. If you ever wind up walking into the thick stuff 6X might be a bit too much to get fast target aquisition and get a shot off.Nice to be able to crank it down to 3X for that.

I have both the scopes you mention.

There is nothing wrong with the 6x it is one of my favorites. It is very crisp and clear, good for picking out detail, such as antlers. This more than makes up for what it looses to the 3x9 in magnification. Also there is no problem using it in the bush at 30 yards, even on running deer. If you cant raise your rifle and have the crosshairs on the target instantly with a 6x using a 3x isn't going to help much.

All that being said I would go with the 3x9 all-rounder scope on an all-rounder cal. like 30-06

Hmm, I've got the M8 6x36 on my .270 and I don't miss a variable on it. The M700 .223 wears a Leupold VariX II 3x9x40 and the Mark V .240 Wby has the same. I'm partial to the VariX II 3x9 so that'll be my choice too.
VXII 3-9x40

they are the '30-06' of the rifle scope world.

Now ain't that the truth...dependable for most any situation...:D

As you know, Marcus, I favor the 6x on my hunting rifles, and at present have 6 rifles scoped with that 6x42 [Including my 700SSDM 30-06] As Republic of Alberta stated, no problem with target acquisition at close range, and a very bright, clear piece of glass. While the 3x9 may apparently seem to give some extra versatility, I take the line that scopes are for shooting, not spotting or evaluating game, so have never seen a big advantage with the variables on a pure hunting rifle. Now IF you were a one-rifle man, and used that '06 for everything....perhaps the 3x9 may serve you better. As a pure hunting rig, I choose the 6x42. :) Regards, Eagleye.

i have both and prefer the 6x42 with heavy duplex. i have more fixed power than varitable, but all my rifles are for hunting not bench shooting. when hunting with a 3x9 i never turn it past 6 anyways.

Geeze...........the 6x42 will be brighter for sure and even though many people hunt with them, I just can't bring myself to do it:confused: . 6x just isn't enough power. I struggle with the variable ~1-6 that I use and consider myself handicapped @ 6x:rolleyes:

I like 6X , but the plain truth is that MOST of my hunting rigs are
iron sighted!!
Go figure......
I say most, because iIdo have one 10X, and also an ancient 3.5X kahles that is on my father's
cat
