Hi guys, I am just thinking of building a good old 30-06 tactical rifle.
I was thinking of going with a 26" 1:10" twist barrel. A blue printed and sleeved(bolt) Remington 700 action.
I am not yet sure of the stock I want yet. I need to get a chance to handle a Elisio tube platform/ MDTAC 21 and a variety of others.

I would prefer this rifle to have a magazine option.

I will definitely have a removable muzzle brake and Barrel thread cap on this rifle.
I plan to shoot 175-190 grain bullets. VLD types.

I will require a 20-30 MOA picatinney type base for long distance scope adjustments
I will shoot this rifle out to 1760yds on occasion, but mainly less than 1000yds.

I am hoping to keep the rifle somewhere around 10-12 lbs in weight. (Just a ball park figure).
Lets see some 30-06/280, etc tactical rifle pictures (accompanied with build descriptions).
I would like to see some ideas from you gunnutz.

Thanks guys!

No need for the 10 twist barrel for these bullets. A 1 in 11 will properly stabilize bullets up to 210 grains. The slower the spin on the bullet while still maintaining gyroscopic stability, the better.

I Have been shooting up to 210grain bullets in the 1:10" twist with no problems. If I am going to shoot the 175-190 grain VLD's out to 1760yds, I think I "MAY" benefit from the faster twist. Has anyone here pushed thier 30-06 to this distance with the 1:10" twist?

Sorry - I missed the bit about shooting it to that kind of distance.

I resurrected an old Remington 700 Long Action last year with a very similar build in 30-06.

(It sounds like we read a few of the same articles.)

Barrel: Shilen Regular Match #7LV contour 1:10 (From Mystic Precision)
Stock: 1998 vintage choate USS (destined to be upgraded, but it does the job for now)
Bolt handle: Tacord welded
Finish: Bake on Teflon
Trigger: stock 1980s Remington (just under 2 lbs, reasonably crisp, but also likely needs upgrading)

In this pic Millett 0MOA base, Millett rings, Sightron SIII 10x, but I have changed that for a Sightron SII 6-20 in Burris Zee rings. The extra magnification is nice.

All in it is just over 13 lbs with the larger scope.

I already had the stock, 0MOA rail and action. Casey at Tacord trued, chambered, and bedded the action, welded on the bolt handle and then parked & finished the action for just over $900 all in. The Shilen Reg Match Barrel cost ~$360, so I'm in at just under $1,300...You should have no trouble adding a better stock and staying under $2,500 for the rifle.

I have nothing but good to say about both Tacord and Mystic Precision. All of my dealings with both have been top-notch.

I have found the 190gr SMKs over H4350 to be the most consistently accurate load, while the Hornady 208gr Amaxes over RL22 are throwing similar average groups, but with a larger standard devation.

I have only had it out to 200 yds, so I can't help much on how it will behave at longer ranges, but I am well pleased with it thus far.

Operator error is my biggest issue, and I have a long way to go before I can shoot up to the level of this rig as it stands, but the practise is the FUN part!

1,760 yds.? Sounds like such an arbritary number. Curious, why that exact distance? I don't think a .30-06 is going to make it that far with any relative degree of accuracy. You might be around 150 fps. better than a .308 Winchester with the 175gr. Sierras but you're burning 10+ extra grains of powder for such a minimal gain in velocity. And I don't hear many guys bragging about .308 Winchester performance much beyond 1,000 yards.

If you're stuck on something .30 cal. then I would go for something in the league of .300 RUM if you were stuck on such a long distance.

1760 yards is a mile.

I think it would be interesting to try a 30-06 at these distances. The furthest I ever took an -06 was 1000 meters with my M1, shooting 150 gr. FMJ BT bullets over. 49.5 gr R15, with great success for irons. Took plenty of sighters to get it on target, but it hit consistently on the 3' target once it was on. There is serious potential to go further then that with a boltgun and the right ammo/ scope/ shooter combo.

I personally tend to say away from the vast majority of Ultra Mag and Magnum calibers, with .338 being the only notable exception. (.50 doesn't count lol)

I believe the OP already has a savage BA110 in 300win mag, so I assume he just wants to try something different. He says he already has the action for this build so I would guess that hes limited on whatever bolt face it has if he doesnt want to have that changed. Or not, idk.

Have you ran the numbers with the heavier 30 cal projectiles? 208gr AMAX, 220 SMK, 230gr Berger Hybrid? May be better for making that flight to a mile if the 06 can push them fast enough?

Good luck

Have a real good look at the 208gr A-max. Forget about the 220gr SMK. If price isn't an issue shoot the 230gr Hybrid.

You are correct JayCarver, I have been shooting my Savage 110BA in 300Win Mag out to a mile many times now. My eventual goal With the 110BA is 2000yds, but time and priority varies! LOL!

I think the Bullets heavier than 210 Grains just wont have the velocity to make the trip from the 30-06 case.

The 208 A-Max would be great, as long as I can get enough velocity to have enough scope adjustment. I dont have the figures on this bullet handy at the moment.

My intention with this 30-06 is to be able to post a reasonable group at 1760yds (1 mile) occasionally. I primarilywould like it to be capable of MOA accuracy out to 1000yds though. If I can get 2750-2800 with a Berger 185VLD, or 2700-2750 with a Berger 190VLD, that should give me what I need to reach my goal. I will set my scope up (+25MOA Rail+Burris signature rings with offset inserts) to have around a full 75MOA verticle adjustment. I should have enough Room in my scope to use the MIL Dots for my point of aim.

I do have a Rem 700 action, and have always wanted to build a long range 30-06. The tough part is that there is no magazines manufactured for the 30-06 cartridge family. At least not a tactical platform magazine system. EXCEPT for the Elisio RT10. (hope I am clear with my explaination)

I may just have the Remington action blue printed, sleeved, and have a heavy 26" match barrel & Muzzle brake installed. I can put it back on the factory stock for now. The donour rifle action/stock has a 4 shot magazine that has lots of length to take advantage of the case capacity of the 30-06 case.

Have any of you gunnutz seen any high quality stocks, like a mcMillan, Bell & Carlson etc, that is inletted to allow the function of Remingtons detachable magazines? I havent seen anything recently.

Well gunnutz, heres an update for you:

I got my Choate "custom" Tactical for the remington Long action from Jerry at mystic precision two weeks ago.
I really like it!
I tried the bottom metal of a few Rem long actions I have, and they fit snug. No problems there.

The rifle I have slated for this stock is/was a Remington 700, stainless Sps, with a detachable magazine.

When I got this stock, I had to do some minor modifications to facilitate the bottom metal.
I had to machine about .020" off each side of the magazine well with a nice fine file. Easy stuff.
Once the bottom metal fit in nicely, and the bolts fit into place, I had to cut the knotches for the detachable magazine release buttons.

For that, i installed the bottom metal, and worked the stock material down with careful draw filing. It worked great! That stock material is seriously tough stuff!

Here are some pictures of the factory barreled action fitted to the Choate "Custom"tactical stock. This version has the adjustable butt pad and length of pull. I got it from Mystic Precision.

I am planning to get both a 30-06, and 280 Remington barrel for this action and build. They are going to be Shilen March Select, #7HV tapers. I am going with a 1:10" twist in the 06', and a 1:8" in the 280 Remington.
Both barrels will be the full 30" length, untill I decide if i want to add a brake to the barrel. At that point I would cut the barrels down a little and use the parted off pieces to make my brakes.

I will get the action Blueprinted and sleeved.

I think this should be a fun project! I will eventually get a few more barrels for this switch barrel system. ie: 2506 (faster than 1:10" twist), 270 Winchester (faster twist than standard), and 35 Whelan (fast twist). I would like to shoot some heavies in each cartridge.

I can hardly wait!!!

Hope you like the pictures guys!

Keep us up to date. Last year I had a 30-06 built. I've been loading Berger 185 juggernauts over VV N550. I'm getting 2840 fps out of a 26''11.25twist rock creek barrel. I to have a goal of a mile but did not get time to set up out there last summer. I did get out to 1400 yards and was pleased. Once i got sorted out with the wind I was consistantly hitting my 20'' gong.

Another barrel option would be a fast twist barrel. Burning powder produces pressure that is proportional to its temperature and pressure. Fast twist rate may increase or extend pressure curve enough to produce higher velocities than slow twist barrels with slower, cooler burning powders. Typically the 30-06, with 1:10 twist barrel, runs good on powders that produce a lot of heat, causing problems with ten shot strings. If increasing the pressure load span generates even the same velocities it would be worth doing. I'm thinking Retumbo.
